Based from outside the cafe in Millhouses park there are a range of different courses to suit all ages and abilities. Take part individually, in a pair or as part of a group and feel free to walk, jog or run round the course at your own pace.

3712835279 efc41b6917 n

Millhouses park and the cafe are here.  You can check out their menu.

The nearest bus stop is served by the every 10 minutes from the centre of Sheffield (97 & 98) also from Ecclesall Road/Hunter's Bar on the 83, Plan Your Journey.  Parking is available in the Pay and Display car parks at the either end of the Park or you can park on Abbeydale Road alongside the park

Registration for the events will open at 12:30pm and you can start any time from 12:30pm – 3pm. All courses close at 3:30pm at which time we will start to collect controls so please make sure you start early enough to complete your course in time. There is no need to register in advance - just turn up on the day. Help & advice is available to newcomers.

Schools Event

Running alongside the public event is an event in the SFSS Orienteering League for both Primary and Secondary pupils. Entry to the schools event is free if your school has entered and you are in Y3 or above. Information about the SFSS Orienteering League is here

Costs

Adults £5, SYO members £4
Children £2 (Free for the first run if you are in Y3 or above and your schools is in the SFSS)
Any additional courses will cost an additional £1 or £2 if your first run was free.
If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry, plus £1 for each extra map.

Orienteering Courses Available

If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.

The light green and long orange courses will also use Hutcliff Woods which is the wooded hillside on the other side of the railway line.  It is not necessary to cross any roads.  It does have a lot of brambles on the upper part of the slope though so wear full leg cover if you are planning to run one of the longer courses.

Course School Years Distance Technical Level Who is it for?
White Y4-Y5 0.9km 1 The easiest course and a great place for children to start.  The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point.
Yellow Y6-Y7 1.5km 2 The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start.  The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc.
It will also no longer have a control every time you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls
Orange Y8-Y9 2.8km 3

Harder still, the Orange course introduces:

  • Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right
  • Using 'Point Features' as control sites
  • Basic use of a compass

The orange has 2 parts.  You run Part 1 and when you get to the last control turn the map over and run Part 2 to the finish

Long Orange Y10+ 3.3km 3

The Long Orange course goes outside the Park into Hutcliffe Wood. It does not involve crossing a road but it will require you to run on the pavement outside the park.

This course uses Hutcliff Wood so there will be brambles...

Light Green   3.7km 4

Ideal for improvers  The navigation difficulty increases and you start to use simple contours and point features.

This course uses Hutcliff Wood so there will be brambles...

Score   30 minutes 4

An 'Odds and Evens' score.  Odd numbered controls are on one side of the map and even numbered controls on the other.  You have 30 minutes to get as many controls as possible.  You can start with Odd numbered controls and at some point switch to Even numbered controls or vice versa but once you have changed you have to can't change back!

This course stays in Millhouses park

For those looking for a longer run this course followed by the Light Green would be a good combination
