Information
A Saturday Afternoon Series event aimed at introducing newcomers to orienteering and includes the third event in the SFSS primary and secondary schools orienteering league.
New for this year - there will be an urban course starting in the Gardens before heading over to the Edge Campus, in addition to a shorter sprint course. Also new: a fun twist on the Long Orange, Sprint and Urban - more details on the day.... Full course details below.
Registration for courses will open at 1pm (12.30pm for adults only). You can start any time from 1pm - 3pm (12.30 to 2.30pm for the urban course) but the courses close at 3:30pm. Controls will be collected from 3:30pm so we're not locked in overnight! (Gates shut ~4pm)
Registration is in the greenhouse. This is situated down towards the bottom entrance to the gardens (next to the swanky new classroom) off Thompson Road See it on a map
Schools Event
Running alongside the public event is the secon event in the Sheffield Federation of School Sports (SFSS) Orienteering League for both Primary and Secondary pupils. Entry to the schools event is free if your school is a member of the SFSS. Information about the SFSS Orienteering League is here. It is not necessary for a teacher to be present from the school.
If you ran last year and have changed schools then you can still use the same Id number but you will need to let us know the name of your new school.
Costs
Adults £5, SYO members £4
Children £2 (Free for the first run if you are in Y3 or above and your schools is in the SFSS)
Any additional courses will cost an additional £1 (Or £2 if your previous run was free)
If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry, plus £1 for each extra map.
Travel and parking
Botanical Gardens is best reached from the city centre by the buses that service Ecclesall Road. Parking is off Ecclesall Road in metered bays. Make sure you don’t park in a “Permit holders only” bay or you will get a parking fine!
Facilities
Toilets near registration and a café near the Broomhill entrance.
Entries
All courses are entry on the day. Everyone is welcome; these events are particularly suitable for newcomers to orienteering. You just have to turn up, pick a course and fill in an entry form. There will be people on hand to help you if you have any questions.
If you ran one of the previous schools events in the series then you should have completed an entry form an been given a number. With the number we are able to add you into the results system much quicker. You can download an entry form with your details on from the registration page using the registration number and email address.
For those who would like to do a second run you will need to complete another entry slip with the same details as before. You are welcome to fill this out in advance and bring it with you when you download (with the £1 entry fee for the second course) and we can give you a map to save queuing again.
Courses
If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.
See below for details on the courses on offer (distances are preliminary at the moment!)
Course | School Years | Distance | Climb | No. of Controls | Technical Level | Who is it for? |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
White |
Y4,5 |
1.0km | 25m | 16 | 1 |
The easiest course and a great place for children to start. The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point. This course stays within the Gardens – competitors must not exit it through any gate whilst on their course. Parents: please ensure your children understand this. |
Yellow | Y6,7 | 1.6km | 45m | 21 | 2 |
The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start. The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc. This course stays within the Gardens – competitors must not exit it through any gate whilst on their course. Parents: please ensure your children understand this. |
Orange | Y8,9 | 2.4km | 70m | 18 | 3 |
Harder still, the Orange course introduces:
This course is split into 2 parts with part 1 printed on one side, when you get to the last control you turn over to part 2 This course stays within the Gardens – competitors must not exit it through any gate whilst on their course. Parents: please ensure your children understand this. |
Long Orange | Y10+ | 3.2km | 28 | 3 |
Similar difficulty to an orange course, but quite a bit further! To add some variety this course also heads out onto surrounding residential roads, but there is NO need for competitors to cross any (major) roads. The roads are generally quiet, but please stick to pavements. U16s look out – rare-sighted cars will be about! This course is split into 2 parts with part 1 printed on one side, when you get to the last control you turn over to part 2 This course includes the fun, technical, challenging TWIST!!! – more details to follow on the day... |
|
Sprint | 1.6km | 40m | 26 | 3/4 |
Short and sweet – staying within the park, it’s ideal for someone who wants a short, but technical run. Its combination of short intricate legs, frequent changes of direction, and some longer route-choice legs, make for all the challenge of the urban, in a third of the distance! This course includes the fun, technical, challenging TWIST!!! – more details to follow on the day... |
|
Urban |
4.4km (~5.5km optimal route) |
34 | 4/5 |
New for this year, the Urban course will start in the Botanical Gardens before heading over to the Edge Campus, and around surrounding residential roads. The course uses both the Gardens, but also heads out onto surrounding urban streets, and into The Edge Campus, making it a 50/50 split of urban/park. The urban area especially (but not exclusively!) makes for intricate navigation, and route choices, all designed to keep you on your toes. Cars move fast along Brocco Bank/Clarkehouse Road (B6069), so the course has 2 timed out crossings to allow for safe crossing, just after it exits, and returns to, the Gardens. The times for these are given on the control descriptions. As the course has just over 30 controls, please ensure you do NOT use a dibber with no. from 2,000,001 to 2,999,999. Any number outside this range will record all the controls – these will be available to hire. You will be crossing roads so unfortunately over 16s only or under 16s accompanied by an adult. This course includes the fun, technical, challenging TWIST!!! – more details to follow on the day... |
Safety & risk
A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.
