(Updated Results, Schools League and Team results added 9 Oct)

Amazing, another event, another record - 434 runs today, 3 up on Endcliffe.  Hope you all enjoyed your courses around the park.  From chatting to people it sounded like it was many peoples first visit to the park.  Hope those that went out on the long light green thought it was worth getting across to the Gleadless Valley, we thought it was and will spend a bit of time re-surveying the wood before the next event.

A big thanks to the Möbus family for planning the courses and to Dom Dakin for producing the map over the summer.  Thank you also to the Friends of Meersbrook Park and the Walled Garden for the use of the toilets.  Finally a huge thank you yet again to all our helpers without whom the events could not take place.  Hope you all ate lots of cake too!

Results are available on the links above along with split times so you can see how long you took on each leg. Schools results are available on the 'Other' link above and team results are below.  If you spot any mistakes then please This email address is being protected from spambots. We have some lost property from today and two bags worth that have been collected over the last year, we bring them to all the schools events so please check next time if you have lost anything.

Information

This is the second combined Sheffield Schools and Saturday Afternoon event in the autumn series.  This series of events is perfect for introducing new people to the sport and also provides local, good value orienteering to the experienced orienteer.

This will be the first time that we have used Meersbrook Park for orienteering.  Thank you to Dom Dakin for surveying and drawing the new map (his first map!) and to Ian Cooper for mentoring him.

Bishops House (at the top of the park) also have their Autumn Fayre on the Saturday and Sunday details here

We will be based outside Meersbrook Hall with the start and finish close by (here)

Registration for courses will open at 1pm (12.30pm for adults only).  You can start any time from 1pm - 3pm (12.30 to 2.30pm for the long course) but the courses close at 3:30pm.

Schools Event

Running alongside the public event is the secon event in the Sheffield Federation of School Sports (SFSS) Orienteering League for both Primary and Secondary pupils.  Entry to the schools event is free if your school is a member of the SFSS. Information about the SFSS Orienteering League is here.  It is not necessary for a teacher to be present from the school.
If you ran last year and have changed schools then you can still use the same Id number but you will need to let us know the name of your new school.

Costs

Adults £5, SYO members £4
Children £2 (Free for the first run if you are in Y3 or above and your schools is in the SFSS)
Any additional courses will cost an additional £1 (Or £2 if your previous run was free)
If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry, plus £1 for each extra map.

Travel and parking

Parking on the streets around the park.  Buses pass by on Chesterfield Road regularly

Facilities

The Friends of Meersbrook Bank School will be running a cake and juice stall to raise money for the school - please support them. The volunteers at the Walled Garden have very kindly allowed us access to the toilets in the Walled Garden. There is a Costa Coffee on Chesterfield Rd - approx 5 minutes walk away.

Entries

All courses are entry on the day.  You just have to turn up, pick a course and fill in an entry form.  There will be people on hand to help you if you have any questions.

If you ran one of the schools events last year then you should have completed an entry form an been given a number. With the number we are able to add you into the results system much quicker.  You can download an entry form with your details on from the registration page using the registration number and email address.

Orienteering Courses Available

If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.

See below for details on the courses on offer.  Distances are provisional:

Course School Years Distance Technical Level Who is it for?
White

Y4,5

1.1km 1 The easiest course and a great place for children to start.  The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point.
Year 3 pupils compete with Y4s.
Yellow Y6,7 1.5km 2 The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start.  The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc.
It will also no longer have a control everytime you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls
Orange Y8,9 2.2km 3

Harder still, the Orange course introduces:

  • Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right
  • Using 'Point Features' as control sites
  • Basic use of a compass
  • Long Orange Y10+ 3.1km 3

Similar difficulty to an orange course, but quite a bit further!

This course is split into 2 parts with part 1 printed on one side, when you get to the last control you turn over to part 2

    Green  16+ 5.3km 5

Ideal for adult improvers and experienced orienteers. The course starts in the park before heading over to the woods and urban areas around Gleadless.  Due to road crossings any under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

    Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.

    Photography

SYO has an agreed policy on the taking of photographs at events, based on national guidance. This provides a sensible balance between the benefits and risks associated with the taking and use of images. If you are unsure about acceptable practice, please speak to the event organiser. Read our photography policy.

    Privacy

When entering our events your personal details (name, gender, age class & club) will appear in the results section of this website. Read our privacy policy to see how we look after your personal data.

    Venue

Meersbrook Park is about 3km south of the Sheffield city centre. Formerly part of the Meersbrook Estate, the park has retained many of its historical features, including the walled garden, and the red-bricked Meersbrook House, built in 1780 (which was home to the Ruskin Museum until 1950). Also within the park is Tudor House, one of only 3 remaining Tudor properties, and one of the oldest buildings in the city, which was built c.1500.

Longer courses will also visit the area south-west of the park, including urban areas and small areas of woodland.
