Details

Looks like we have hardy orienteers in South Yorkshire as we still had a great turnout today despite the weather.  For those interested in stats, we had 284 runners who covered 561km climbing 18,000m in the process and dibbing 3349 controls (well, almost...).

Preliminary results and splits are on the links above. (updated 12 Feb at 19:52)  You will see there are a number of unknown names etc. so if you can't see your result please get in touch.  Same goes for any spelling mistakes etc.

We also have preliminary schools results available - individual results on the 'other' link above and the team results below.  We haven't checked for double runs etc. yet but it looks like we have a new school top of the Primary results with Dobcroft winning by 2 points ahead of Hunter's Bar and Nethergreen.

Thank you to Andy, Louise, Will, Stanley and Martha for planning the courses and to all our volunteers for helping things run so smoothly.  We're always looking for more people to give us a hand so that we can spread the load, so if you are able to help at any of our events do let us know.

Only one item of lost property - a smallish coat (with the name Henry inside), so there must be someone out there shivering at the moment.  Drop us a message if you think it is yours.

Thanks also to the staff at the Discovery Centre, I hope you all kept the cafe busy!

The next schools event is at Norfolk Park on 18 March, this is part of the Outdoor city Weekender and running alongside the standard courses we will have Urban courses heading out of the park down to Parkhill Flats etc.

We are also having another afternoon tackling brambles in Ecclesall woods (4th March 1 - 3pm from the Discovery Centre).  We held one last weekend and I think we were all surprised how much we managed to clear.  The only person in the club not happy with it is Ian as he will have to go and update the map!

Information

The Saturday series is aimed at beginners but with courses for the experienced as well. It also includes the fourth event in the Sheffield Schools Orienteering League. The orienteering is suitable for all ages and abilities.

Ecclesall woods is one of the best areas that we use for orienteering in South Yorkshire. The wood is split into three sections by roads but for this session we will only be using the main west block so there will be no need to cross any roads.

We will be based at the J G Graves Woodland Discovery Centre in the saw mill site.  Registration is at Hector's House, the centre has a cafe and toilets etc.

The JG Graves centre is here.  If you are driving there is parking at the centre although it can only take 20 cars or so.  Please only try to park at the saw mill if you have very young children.  There are parking bays on Abbey Lane but again these are often full with dog walkers.  The most reliable place to park is on Whirlowdale Road, it is about a 5 minute walk to the centre.

There are various public transport options.  You can use the Travel South Yorkshire website to your travel.

Registration for courses will open at 1pm.  You can start any time from 1pm - 3pm but the courses close at 3:30pm. There is an adult's only (due to road crossings) green course - starts from 12.30pm to 2.30pm.

Schools Event

Running alongside the public event is the forth event in the Sheffield School Orienteering League for both Primary and Secondary pupils. Entry to the schools event is free if your school is a member of the Sheffield Federation of School Sports (SFSS). Information about the SFSS Orienteering League is here. It is not necessary for a teacher to be present from the school.

Entries

All courses are entry on the day. You just have to turn up, pick a course and fill in an entry form. There will be people on hand to help you if you have any questions.

If you ran one of the previous schools events in the series then you should have completed an entry form an been given a number. With the number we are able to add you into the results system much quicker. You can download an entry form with your details on from the registration page using the registration number and email address.

For those who would like to do a second run you will need to complete another entry slip with the same details as before. You are welcome to fill this out in advance and bring it with you when you download (with the £1 entry fee for the second course) and we can give you a map to save queuing again.

Costs

Adults £4, £3 for club members

Children £2. Children running a schools courses whose school is a member of the SFSS are free.

Any additional courses will cost an additional £1

If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry.

Orienteering Courses Available

At an orienteering event there are a range of different courses to try, depending on your navigation experience, age, fitness etc. You can pretty much garantee that there will be a course that will suit you! The courses are colour coded and at different events a course with a particular colour, e.g. Yellow, should be similar both in difficulty and distance.

If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.

Course School Year Distance Technical Level Who is it for?
White Y4,5 0.9km 1 The easiest course and a great place for children to start. The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point.
Yellow Y6,7 2.0km 2 The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start. The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc.
It will also no longer have a control everytime you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls
Orange Y8,9 2.4km 3

Harder still, the Orange course introduces:

  • Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right
  • Using 'Point Features' as control sites
  • Basic use of a compass
Long Orange Y10+ 3.6km 3 Similar to the orange but longer...
Green 5.6km 5

Experienced orienteers or someone up for a challenge! This course will focus on route choice - straight through the forest or round the paths, which is quicker?

The course crosses Abbey Lane, please take care when crossing.

Venue

Ecclesall Woods comprises over 100 hectares (300 acres) of mature deciduous woodland of variable runnability and is notable for a large number of thickets. The gently sloping land is divided by two roads and a network of bridleways, footpaths, streams and ditches. Some of the minor paths have become overgrown or are difficult to discern when covered by autumn leaves.
