Details

Well that was busy! Thank you to everyone for being patient while we got people downloaded. 455 runs is another record. Great to see more parents giving it a go as well. Next time we will have a second download station which should speed things up a little. A huge thank you to everyone that helped today, you coped amazingly under the pressure!

Results are available above, along with splits that show how long you took on each leg. There are a few missing names etc. so if you don't see your name there or you spot any spelling mistakes etc. please let us know. Individual schools results are available on the 'Other' link above or here.  Team results are below.  It would be great to get a few more complete teams, especially in the secondary competition, so get your friends along.

The next schools event is on 26 Nov at Botanical Gardens but there is plenty of opportunities before then, take a look at our events page.

An important date to keep free is Sunday 20th November, the British Schools Championships (years 5 - 13) held this year at Sutton Park to the north east of Birmingham.  SYO will be organising a coach (or two) as we did last year, an email will be sent out soon to club members.  Information on the event is here.

We had a couple of items left - a bag of bananas, a flask and a pair of glasses. Let me know if they are yours.

Information

This is a combined Sheffield Schools and Saturday Afternoon series aimed to introduce new people to the sport and also provide training opportunities to all orienteers.

Based outside the cafe in Millhouses park this session is suitable for all ages and abilities.

Millhouses park and the cafe are here.  You can check out their menu.

The nearest bus stop is served by the every 10 minutes from the centre of Sheffield (97 & 98) also from Ecclesall Road/Hunter's Bar on the 83, Plan Your Journey.  Parking is available in the Pay and Display car parks at the either end of the Park.

Registration for courses will open at 1pm.  You can start any time from 1pm - 3pm but the courses close at 3:30pm.

Schools Event

Running alongside the public event is an event in the SFSS Orienteering League for both Primary and Secondary pupils.  Entry to the schools event is free if your school has entered and you are in Y3 or above. Information about the SFSS Orienteering League is here

Costs

Adults £4, SYO members £3
Children £2 (Free for the first run if you are in Y3 or above and your schools is in the SFSS)
Any additional courses will cost an additional £1
If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry, plus £1 for each extra map.

Orienteering Courses Available

If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.

The light green and map memory courses will also use Hutcliff Woods which is the (steep) wooded hillside on the other side of the railway line.  It is not necessary to cross any roads.  It does have a lot of brambles on the upper part of the slope though...

Course School Years Distance Technical Level Who is it for?
White Y4-Y5 1km 1 The easiest course and a great place for children to start.  The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point.
Yellow Y6-Y7 1.9km 2 The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start.  The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc.
It will also no longer have a control every time you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls
Orange Y8-Y9 2.4km 3

Harder still, the Orange course introduces:

  • Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right
  • Using 'Point Features' as control sites
  • Basic use of a compass

The orange has 2 parts.  You run Part 1 and when you get to the last control turn the map over and run Part 2 to the finish

Long Orange Y10+ 3.2km 3

The Long Orange course goes outside the Park into Hutcliffe Wood. It does not involve crossing a road but does require children to run on the pavement.

Light Green 4.1km 4

Ideal for improvers  The navigation difficulty increases and you start to use simple contours and point features.

This course uses Hutcliff Wood so there will be brambles...

Map Memory 2.4km 4

Experienced orienteers or someone up for a challenge!  Rather than carrying a map each control has a map extract that shows the location of the next control.  You have to figure out the route and then run to the next control.  If you lose your way you have no option but to retrace your steps back to the last control and try again.

This course stays in Millhouses park

For those looking for a longer run this course followed by the Light Green would be a good combination

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.
