Details
Thanks to everyone who braved the showers today. It made us realise how lucky that this was the first in the league to have had serious rain... Made to an atmospheric prize-giving with thunder rolling round.
Preliminary results are available above along with splits. Schools results are available on the other tab.
Information
The Saturday series is aimed at beginners but with courses for the experienced as well. It also includes the final event in the Sheffield Schools Orienteering League. Following the event there will be a prize-giving for the league - more details below.
Weston Park is close to the centre of Sheffield, next to the University and Childrens Hospital. The Weston Park Museum has lots of great exhibits. We will be based outside the museum, close to the main entrance. The orienteering is suitable for all ages and abilities.
The museum is here. Parking will be on surrounding streets, Mushroom Lane and Northumberland Road west of the A57 are good places to try, the museum website indicates that the Sheffield University car parks at Durham Road and the Arts Tower are free at weekends . The nearest bus stop is served by the 51 and 52 very regularly from the centre of Sheffield.
Registration for courses will open at 1pm. You can start any time from 1pm - 3pm but the courses close at 3:30pm.
Schools Event & Prize-giving
The prize-giving for this year's league will start at 4pm.
Medals will be awarded for the top 3 in the league in each age group provided that they have completed at least 5 events. There will also be an award for the overall winners of the Primary and Secondary leagues. Finally there will also be certificates for anyone who has competed at 5 or more events and a special award for anyone who has run at all 9 events.
It would be a great help if anyone in with a chance of finishing in the top 3 overall could run early to give us time to calculate overall results and print certificates etc. We realise this may mean you are hanging around for a while but there is plenty to do at the Museum and why not bring a picnic.
Entry to the schools event is free if your school is a member of the Sheffield Federation of School Sports (SFSS). Information about the SFSS Orienteering League is here. It is not necessary for a teacher to be present from the school.
If you have attended any of the schools league races so far you can download an entry form with your details on from the registration page. If this will be the first event you have attended this year then please go the the registration page and enter your details. If you don't get chance to do this before Saturday then you can still register at the event.
Costs
Adults £4, SYO members £3
Children £2 (Free for the first run if you are in Y3 or above and your schools is in the SFSS)
Any additional courses will cost an additional £1
If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry, plus £1 for each extra map.
Orienteering Courses Available
If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.
At an orienteering event there are a range of different courses to try, depending on your navigation experience, age, fitness etc. The courses are colour coded and at different events a course with a particular colour, e.g. Yellow, should be similar both in difficulty and distance.
At Weston Park, only the Long course will go outside the park boundaries. This course will use the underpass to cross the A57 to more of the University and will also cross Mushroom Lane, the small road by the side of the park, to access Crookes Valley Park.
If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.
Course | School Year | Distance | Technical Level | Who is it for? |
White | Y4,5 | 0.9km | 1 | The easiest course and a great place for children to start. The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point. |
Yellow | Y6,7 | 1.2km | 2 |
The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start. The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc. Because of the park setting there will be some controls that do not follow line feature. Instead they will be on a point feature (e.g. a tree) but close by. By turning the map so that it matches the ground you will be able to see the next control to go to. |
Orange | Y8,9 | 1.8km | 3 |
Harder still, the Orange course introduces:
To make things clearer on the map the course will be in 2 parts. The first part will be on one side, once you get to the last control on the first part, turn the map over to continue on the second part |
Long Orange | Y10+ | 3.0km | 3 |
To make things clearer on the map the course will be in 2 parts. The first part will be on one side, once you get to the last control on the first part, turn the map over to continue on the second part |
Long | 3.5km | 3 |
Using Crookes Valley Park and part of the University south of the A57 (YOU MUST USE THE UNDERPASS TO CROSS THE A57). |
|
'Blank Map' | 1.9km | 4 |
Experienced orienteers or someone up for a challenge! The map will have most of the details blanked out so you will need to use accurate compass and distance judgement between the controls. |
Safety & risk
A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.

SYO has an agreed policy on the taking of photographs at events, based on national guidance. This provides a sensible balance between the benefits and risks associated with the taking and use of images. If you are unsure about acceptable practice, please speak to the event organiser. Read our photography policy.
Privacy
When entering our events your personal details (name, gender, age class & club) will appear in the results section of this website. Read our privacy policy to see how we look after your personal data.
Venue
Weston Park is 5-hectare traditional park very near the City Centre. Events there usually have courses that extend into Crookes Valley Park to the NW and around the buildings and grounds of Sheffield University Main Campus. The combination of complex urban terrain and runnable parkland makes for entertaining orienteering. The Weston Park Museum in one corner is an interesting family-friendly museum.
