Details
Well that was a record turnout - 327 runs with 192 runs on the White course!
Hope you all enjoyed it. A huge thank you to all our helpers they did a fantastic job considering the numbers.
Our Registration Team: Bronwen, Lorraine, Susan, Judith, Pauline, James & Richard
Starters: Monika & Jacky
Finish Team: Charlie, Anita & Kris
Data-entry and download: Dom, Pippa, Jenny, Erin & Euan
Control Collecting: Colin, Tim & Lucy
As you can see it takes a fair bit of effort to put on these events so if anyone is able to help at any of our future events it would be great!
A big thank you to everyone at the Discovery Centre, it is a fantastic facility in a great location. When it got busy Hector's House was a little packed! Next year we will try to spread the registration and download out a bit more.
Sorry for those who had to queue whilst we were waiting for dibbers. We are slowly building our stock but with the longer than normal route to the start and finish it took us a bit longer to re-cycle. If people could try to make sure they download as soon as possible after finishing it would be appreciated
Ecclesall Woods is much trickier than many of the areas that we use in the league. Thank you to Colin Best for planning some challenging courses. Well done to everyone for getting round.
Provisional results are on the link above, along with the link to splits so you can see how you did on each leg. As ever there are a few runs that do not have a name against them. If you don't appear, or your splits paper does not have your name at the top please let me know, you can email me on the link below.
Age group results are available using the 'Other' link above and the school team results are below. These are all provisional for now. Overall league results will be updated once these results become confirmed.
See you all at the Botanical Gardens in February.
Pete

Information
The Saturday series is aimed at beginners but with courses for the experienced as well. It also includes the fourth event in the Sheffield Schools Orienteering League. The orienteering is suitable for all ages and abilities.
Ecclesall woods is one of the best areas that we use for orienteering in South Yorkshire. Ecclesall Wood is split into three sections by roads but for this session we will only be using the main west block so there will be no need to cross any roads.
We will be based at the J G Graves Woodland Discovery Centre in the saw mill site.
The JG Graves centre is here. The cafe is now open! If you are driving there is parking at the centre although it can only take 20 cars or so. Please only use the parking if you have very young children. There are parking bays on Abbey Lane but again these are often full with dog walkers. The most reliable place to park is on Whirlowdale Road, it is about a 5 minute walk to the centre.
Registration for courses will open at 1pm. You can start any time from 1pm - 3pm but the courses close at 3:30pm.
Schools Event
Running alongside the public event is the forth event in the Sheffield School Orienteering League for both Primary and Secondary pupils. Entry to the schools event is free if your school is a member of the Sheffield Federation of School Sports (SFSS). Information about the SFSS Orienteering League is here. It is not necessary for a teacher to be present from the school.
Entries
All courses are entry on the day. You just have to turn up, pick a course and fill in an entry form. There will be people on hand to help you if you have any questions.
If you ran one of the previous schools events in the series then you should have completed an entry form an been given a number. With the number we are able to add you into the results system much quicker. You can download an entry form with your details on from the registration page using the registration number and email address.
If this will be the first event you have attended this year then please go the the registration page and enter your details. If you don't get chance to do this before the event then you can still register at the event. REGISTRATION PAGE
For those who would like to do a second run you will need to complete another entry slip with the same details as before. You are welcome to fill this out in advance and bring it with you when you download (with the £1 entry fee for the second course) and we can give you a map to save queuing again.
Costs
Adults £4, £3 for club members
Children £2. Children running a schools courses whose school is a member of the SFSS are free.
Any additional courses will cost an additional £1
If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry.
Orienteering Courses Available
At an orienteering event there are a range of different courses to try, depending on your navigation experience, age, fitness etc. You can pretty much garantee that there will be a course that will suit you! The courses are colour coded and at different events a course with a particular colour, e.g. Yellow, should be similar both in difficulty and distance.
If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.
Course | School Year | Distance | Technical Level | Who is it for? |
---|---|---|---|---|
White | Y4,5 | 1.3km | 1 | The easiest course and a great place for children to start. The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point. |
Yellow | Y6,7 | 2.0km | 2 | The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start. The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc. It will also no longer have a control everytime you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls |
Orange | Y8,9 | 2.5km | 3 |
Harder still, the Orange course introduces:
|
Long Orange | Y10+ | 3.4km | 3 | Similar to the orange but longer... |
Light Green | 3.7km | 4 |
Ideal for improvers. The navigation difficulty increases and you start to use simple contours and point features. |
|
Map Memory | 3.4km | 5 | Experienced orienteers or someone up for a challenge! Rather than carrying a map each control has a map extract that shows the location of the next control. You have to figure out the route and then run to the next control. If you lose your way you have no option but to retrace your steps back to the last control and try again. |

Venue
Ecclesall Woods comprises over 100 hectares (300 acres) of mature deciduous woodland of variable runnability and is notable for a large number of thickets. The gently sloping land is divided by two roads and a network of bridleways, footpaths, streams and ditches. Some of the minor paths have become overgrown or are difficult to discern when covered by autumn leaves.
