Details

Hope you enjoyed your runs around Parkwood Springs, Firshill and Roe Woods.  Great to see some of our new members out.  Well done to Adam and James for doing the link to the Fat Cat.  Thank you to Colin and Laura for collecting controls, it made my jod much easier.  (Hazel, I'm afraid control 11 was there!)

Information

Come along and enjoy a park, wood, estate and urban orienteering in one course...  We have stitched together the Firshill, Parkwood Springs and the City map to give you a a whole host of different terrain.

Following a similar format to other evening events.  Start will be from 5:30 - 7pm from the car park off Cooks Wood Rd (here).  Drinks after at the Fat Cat on Alma St (here).

Buses seem to be pretty regular with a variety of routes use the journey planner.  Parking is available , the gate will be locked at 20:00 so make sure you are back in time!  All courses appart from the Fat Cat link will close at 7:45pm to make sure we are out of the car park in time.  The link will close just after 8pm...

As well as the normal courses there is also an option to extend your course and finish at the Fat Cat - if you can figure out the logistics...(1.8km straight line, around 3km in reality and pretty much all downhill)

The area has several popular mountain bike trails, courses are designed so that you should not need to run along them and please be very careful when crossing them.

If anyone would be able to collect some controls or has any questions please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Costs

Adults £4 or £3 for members of SYO or another orienteering club

Children £2

Any additional courses will cost an additional £1

If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry.

Orienteering Courses Available

If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.  All courses appart from the Fat Cat link will close at 7:45pm to make sure we are out of the car park before it is locked.

Please note that because Green and Blue cross a fairly busy road M/W14s and below must be accompanied by an adult.

Course Distance Technical Level Who is it for?
Yellow

1.9km

30m climb

The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc.
It will also no longer have a control every time you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls

This course stays inside Parkwood Springs, there are no roads to cross

Orange

2.4km

50m climb

3

Harder than the Yellow, the Orange course introduces:

  • Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right
  • Using 'Point Features' as control sites
  • Basic use of a compass

This course stays inside Parkwood Springs, there are no roads to cross

Green

3.2km

60m climb

5

As technically hard as the area allows.  You'll be in Parkwood Springs, Firshill estate and Roe Woods but with fewer loops than the Blue course.

You will be crossing Cooks Wood Road so please take care.

Blue
(long)

4.6km

120m climb

5

As technically hard as the area allows.  You'll be in Parkwood Springs, Firshill estate and Roe Woods.  Add the Fat Cat link to finish the job off!

You will be crossing Cooks Wood Road so please take care.

Fat Cat Link

1.8km

3

Mix of Park and Urban, crossing lots of roads...

If you want to do this then when you get to the normal finish rather than using the finish control go to the Fat Cat Link control, punch it and pick up a map.  There will be a finish box and download at the Fat Cat.
