The City Centre Street score orienteering event will take place on Thursday 8th January, based at The Rutland Arms, 86 Brown St, Sheffield, S1 2BS
The Orienteering
The race is based on one of the maps that Oli Johnson produced for the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival. You will get an orienteering map of the City centre with control circles marked on. There are control descriptions for these control circles in the form of questions, the answers for which you will find in the centre of the circle. Some controls are compulsory. We are not using kites or punches or SI.
There will be a mass start at 6.15pm and you have 45 minutes to find as many answers as you can.
Each control will be worth ten points with some controls being compulsory, and the penalty for being late will cost 5 points for each 15 seconds.
The entry fee for the Orienteering is £3 for adults and £2 for juniors.
You can take part on your own or with a partner or as a group but there will only be one map and one set of clues/control descriptions for each entry.
Register in the Rutland Arms from 5.45pm onwards. You can leave a bag in the pub while you run. At 6.10pm we will head for the Start (which is 5 minutes away) en masse.
Safety
Please ensure you have a way of telling the time, a torch and something with which to write on waterproof paper - illegible answers won't count!
Because There are some busy roads in the City centre which should be crossed with care even in daylight and our event takes place at night a fluorescent running vest or bib or running top with reflective patches is compulsory.
Even with a reflective top only cross roads or tram tracks at Crossing points. pedestrian crossings and underpasses are shown on the map so please use them.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
The Food
We have booked a room in the Rutland Arms for a meal afterwards.
The Rutland Arms is a cosy City centre pub, popular with university staff. They have reserved their function room for us which will be large enough to take about 40 people.
There is no car park and so you will need to pay the usual parking fees in the town centre which apply till 8.30pm.
Supper will be a veggie chilli with rice at £6.50 per head. The pub will also provide a more expensive bar menu but it will only have limited resources for preparation and the queues could be long. I'd go for the chilli.
