Terrain

Open moorland, marsh and steep sided woodland with few linear features. Technically and physically challenging with some very boggy areas.

Map

Scale 1:10,000

Notecairnon map and pictorial descriptions is a Cross – but as it has lost its arms it looks more like a standing stone. On the Yellow course it is described as “Standing Stone (cross)”.

Courses

CourseDistanceClimbTechnical LevelWho is it for?
White 1.5km 35m 1 The easiest course and a great place for children to start. The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point.
Year 3 pupils can compete with Y4s.
Yellow 2.0km 50m 2 The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start. The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc.
It will also no longer have a control everytime you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls
Orange 2.6km 95m 3

Harder still, the Orange course introduces:

  • Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right
  • Using 'Point Features' as control sites
  • Basic use of a compass
Long Orange 4.7km 175m 3

Similar difficulty to an orange course, but quite a bit further!

Light Green 3.0km 110m 4

Ideal forimprovers The navigation difficulty increases and you start to use simple contours and point features.

Short Green 3.2km 70m 5

The navigation is a hard as the area permits and are aimed at those wanting a relatively short run with a technical challenge.

Green 4.1km 110m 5 Same technical difficulty as the short green, but longer and on Ramsley Moor physically challenging
Blue 5.7km 140m 5 As hard as the green but longer
Brown 7.9km 190m 5 As hard as the blue but... you get the picture.

It is recommended that adults who haven't orienteered previously but prefer a longer run do the Long Orange course.

Competitors are reminded that Ramsley Moor is exposed moorland at 300m elevation and in the middle of winter can be potentially hazardous.

Come prepared to wear or at least carry a waterproof hooded jacket. If it is particularly cold hat and gloves are strongly recommended.

Whistles are also strongly recommended as is the carrying of a mobile phone with SYO emergency number 07493 183323 pre-programmed into the memory.

The white and yellow courses cross a stream which is normally crossable with ease but if in spate could be a hazard for children in which case a safe crossing point will be taped. This will be advised at the Start.

Don’t forget Competitors are responsible for their own safety.

Venue

Ramsley Moor was mapped and used for the first time in 2009 and was described on Nopesport by one well known member of AIre as "a real gem"

Open mostly heathery moorland with large areas of runnable woodland, dissected by a large valley.   There are few linear features.  If it is wet, spotting the best crossing point  for some of the marshes can be important.
