Details

Thanks to those who came and enjoyed their courses at Bolehill.

The courses were planned by Pippa Dakin (16 this year) and her brother Dom (13 this year), with Dom doing most of the Condes computer work. I think they did a great job with a small area.

Apologies to Orange and Light Green Competitors

Our apologies for those on Orange and Light Green who were shouted at by a resident in one of the flats at the NW edge of the area. We believed that the private property boundary was the ruined fence shown on the map, as there is no other indication of any other boundary. We will try to clarify whether this assumption is wrong before our next event there and contact the residents if necessary.

These courses could also have done with another circle break at control 41 and a line break before control 38, the best access paths were obscured.

As controller I should have picked up these issues, sorry.

Lost property

We have a compass and a grey zipped top, please email me using the contact page or phone Jacky Dakin on 0114-2630425.

This Saturday afternoon event wa at Bolehill Park.  These events aim to introduce new people to the sport and also provide training opportunities to all orienteers.  Bolehill is a small park near to Crookes that consists of partly open grass areas, and runnable woodland.

It is a great area to get kids into orienteering, with the park’s clear tarmac paths (White and Yellow courses), and for people wanting a challenge, there is technical woodland (Orange and Light Green courses), and also some urban area surrounding the park (Light Green course).

We will be based next to the children's play park here

Parking is on the residential roads around the south-east end of the park.  The best is Northfield Ave, with a lot of parkside parking with registration in view. otherwise Longfield Rd, Loxely View Rd, Netherfield Rd, Stothard Rd and Woodfield Rd.

Registration for courses will open at 12:45 pm.  You can start any time from 1pm - 3pm but the courses close at 3:30pm.

Entry Fees

Adults £4

Children/Students £2

Any additional courses will cost an additional £1

If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry.

Orienteering Courses Available

If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.

See below for details on the courses on offer

Course Distance Technical Level Who is it for?
White 0.9km 1 The easiest course and a great place for children to start.  The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point.
Yellow 1.6km 2 The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start.  The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc.
It will also no longer have a control everytime you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls
Orange 2.2km 3

Harder still, the Orange course introduces:

  • Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right
  • Using 'Point Features' as control sites
  • Basic use of a compass
Light Green

3.3km

4

Ideal for improvers. The navigation difficulty increases and you start to use simple contours and point features.

The course goes into urban areas but always on pavements and do not cross any busy roads.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.
