Details
Sorry for the delay in getting the result visible - they were done on Saturday but not visible!!
I hope you all enjoyed the courses and beautiful weather today in Norfolk Park. Results are available above, split times are here. We will try to get the Schools results out over the next few days.
Thanks to everyone who helped and see you all at Bingham Park on 7th June. We are also at Bowden Housteads for an evening event before then on the 22 May 6-7pm.
Information
This is a combined Sheffield Schools and Saturday Afternoon series aimed to introduce new people to the sport and also provide training opportunities to all orienteers.
This session is suitable for all ages and abilities.
We will be based at the Centre in the Park car park off Guilford Avenue (here). By Tram the nearest tram stop is Arbourthorne Road. There is a five minute walk from the tram stop to the Centre in the Park. Registration will be in the centre with the start and finish near by. The centre has a cafe.
Registration for courses will open at 1pm. You can start any time from 1pm - 3pm but the courses close at 3:30pm.
Costs
Adults £4 or £3 for members of SYO or another orienteering club
Children £2
There is no charge for those pupils of Sheffield schools who subscribe to the SFSS who run the correct course for their age group. However 2nd runs will cost £2.
Any additional courses will cost an additional £1
If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry.
Orienteering Courses Available
If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.
Course | School Years | Distance | Technical Level | Who is it for? |
White | Y4-Y5 | 1.5km | 1 | The easiest course and a great place for children to start. The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point. |
Yellow | Y6-Y7 | 1.7km | 2 | The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start. The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc. It will also no longer have a control every time you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls |
Orange | Y8-Y9 | 2.8km | 3 |
Harder still, the Orange course introduces:
The orange has 2 parts. You run Part 1 and when you get to the last control turn the map over and run Part 2 to the finish |
Long Orange | Y10+ | 3.6km | 3 |
The Long Orange course is similar in difficulty to the Orange, but longer! |
Light Green | 4.6km | 4 |
Ideal for improvers The navigation difficulty increases and you start to use simple contours and point features. |
|
Map Memory | 2.6km | 4 |
Experienced orienteers or someone up for a challenge! Rather than carrying a map each control has a map extract that shows the location of the next control. You have to figure out the route and then run to the next control. If you lose your way you have no option but to retrace your steps back to the last control and try again. For those looking for a longer run this course followed by the Light Green would be a good combination |
Safety & risk
A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.
Photography
SYO has an agreed policy on the taking of photographs at events, based on national guidance. This provides a sensible balance between the benefits and risks associated with the taking and use of images. If you are unsure about acceptable practice, please speak to the event organiser. Read our photography policy.
Privacy
When entering our events your personal details (name, gender, age class & club) will appear in the results section of this website. Read our privacy policy to see how we look after your personal data.
Venue
Norfolk Heritage Park is a 28 hectare park with a long history, as it is one of the oldest public parks in the country. From 1999 to 2005 the park has been regenerated through a £3.6 million restoration project. New visitor facilities have been constructed, including the Centre in the Park, a multi-purpose community building. The park landscape has been restored to its original Victorian character.
From an orienteering perspective its interest is largely in the woodlands that cover about 25% of the park and the urban surrounds which are currently undergoing re-development. There is a permanent course, maps can be downloaded from the Friends of Norfolk Park website.
