22:55 Sat Results updated, first version missed a few names

Registration Registration will take place in or near the café at Forge Dam.

There is no charge for those pupils of Sheffield schools who subscribe to the SFSS who run the correct course for their age group. However 2^nd runs will cost £2.

£4 for adults and £3 for club members

Travel Forge Dam is best reached from the city centre by the buses that run to Fulwood village.

Parking There is very little parking at Forge Dam itself so parking will be on nearby residential roads. Please park considerately

Facilities Toilets and café.

Times Registration is from 1pm to 2.45pm with starts from 1pm until 2.45pm. Courses close at 3.30pm

Courses Y4 and Y5 will compete on the White course which is 1.1km. The White course stays within the Forge Dam park

Y6 will compete on the Yellow Course which is 1.6k. Y7 pupils will compete on the Yellow course, along with Y6s. The Yellow ventures briefly into the Porter Valley.

Both courses will involve straightforward navigation and are designed so that they can be completed without the use of a compass.

Children can expect to take between 20 and 40 minutes to complete the White course: between 25 and 40 minutes on the Yellow course.

Y8 and Y9 will compete on the Orange course which is 2.1km long. The Orange course also ventures into the Porter Valley.

Y10 and above will compete on the Long Orange course which is 3.5km long and crosses Whiteley Wood Road twice. Whiteley Wood Road will have traffic on it so children need to cross with care.

The Orange courses provide a greater navigational challenge.

Pupils doing either of the Orange courses need to be able to judge distances, orientate the map using surrounding features and a compass, use attack points and be bold enough to venture off paths for up to 30 metres

There will be two more technical courses. A Light Green of 3.9km and a Map Memory course.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.

Venue

Forge Dam forms one of several ponds created along the Porter Valley to feed metal-working mills. The Porter Valley is wooded along all of its length west from Hunters Bar (Bingham Park) to Ringinglow. The Forge Dam map includes Forge Dam Park and surrounding woodland, which was planted for the 1951 Festival of Britain.

The Forge Dam map includes Whiteley Woods, a larger area of woods which is also on some versions of the Bingham Park map. This part also includes an area of overgrown allotments, some of which are now mature woodland. There is some contour detail and the ruined walls, hedges and bulding bases add interest.
