Results have been loaded (see above).  Turnout was disappointing, perhaps the glorious weather tempted people out of the city rather than in to a central park.

Information

The next in the Saturday Series is at Norfolk Park.  The Saturday Series aims to introduce new people to the sport and also provide training opportunities to all orienteers.

We will be based at the  car park off Guilford Avenue (here).  By Tram the nearest tram stop is Arbourthorne Road. There is a five minute walk from the tram stop to the Centre in the Park.  Registration, start and finish will be next to the Centre in the Park.

Registration for courses will open at 10:30m.  You can start any time from 10:30am - 12:30pm but the courses close at 1pm.

Schools Event

Running alongside the public event will be a schools event for both Primary and Secondary pupils.  Information about the SFSS Orienteering League is here

Orienteering Courses Available

If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.

See below for details on the courses on offer

Course Distance Technical Level Who is it for?
White 1.4km 1 The easiest course and a great place for children to start.  The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point.
Yellow 1.8km 2 The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start.  The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc.
It will also no longer have a control everytime you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls
Orange 2.6km 3

Harder still, the Orange course introduces:

  • Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right
  • Using 'Point Features' as control sites
  • Basic use of a compass
Long Orange 3.7km 3

Slightly harder than the normal orange course, but quite a bit further!

This course is split into 2 parts with part 1 printed on one side, when you get to the last control you turn over to part 2

Map Memory  2.6km 4

Experienced orienteers or someone up for a challenge!  Rather than carrying a map each control has a map extract that shows the location of the next control.  You have to figure out the route and then run to the next control.  If you lose your way you have no option but to retrace your steps back to the last control and try again.

Compass 2.6km 4

An exercise to practice your compass bearing and distance estimation.  A map with just the controls on so you need to run on your bearing and use distance estimation techniques e.g. pacing to find the right control.

The distances are provisional!

Costs

Adults £4

Children £2

Any additional courses will cost an additional £1

If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.

Venue

Norfolk Heritage Park is a 28 hectare park with a long history, as it is one of the oldest public parks in the country.  From 1999 to 2005 the park has been regenerated through a £3.6 million restoration project.  New visitor facilities have been constructed, including the Centre in the Park, a multi-purpose community building.  The park landscape has been restored to its original Victorian character.

From an orienteering perspective its interest is largely in the woodlands that cover about 25% of the park and the urban surrounds which are currently undergoing re-development.  There is a permanent course, maps can be downloaded from the Friends of Norfolk Park website.

Mapping History:
2009 Ray Waight
2010 Chris Smithard (ShUOC) at 1:5000.
2017 Pete Tryner for the the Outdoor City Weekender event with the urban area surrounding the park and All Saints school and Sheffield College (Scale 1:5000 2.5m contours)
