Results

Hope you enjoyed the sunshine and showers at Millhouses today.  Results and Split times can be accessed using the links above.  There are still a couple of dodgy results to fix.  Apologies to those on the orange course that had a couple of control numbers mixed up, I hope it didn't spoil anyones run.

Thank you to the volunteers that helped today.  If anyone would like to help at a future event please let me know.

The next few events are next Sunday 19 May in Walkley, Thursday 23rd May in the Botanical Gardens and the next Saturday event will be at Hillsborough Park on 1st June.

Information

This is the next event in the Saturday Afternoon series aimed to introduce new people to the sport and also provide training opportunities to all orienteers.  There is also a Sheffield Schools event in the morning, see the separate event details for information.

Based outside the cafe in Millhouses park this session is suitable for all ages and abilities.

Millhouses park and the cafe are here.  You can check out their menu.

The nearest bus stop is served by the every 10 minutes from the centre of Sheffield (97 & 98) also from Ecclesall Road/Hunter's Bar on the 83, more information.

Registration for courses will open at 1pm.  You can start any time from 1pm - 3pm but the courses do close at 3:30pm.

Orienteering Courses Available

If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.

The light green and map memory courses will also use Hutcliff Woods which is the (steep) wooded hillside on the other side of the railway line.  It is not necessary to cross any roads.  It does have a lot of brambles on the upper part of the slope though...

Course Distance Technical Level Who is it for?
White 1.4km 1 The easiest course and a great place for children to start.  The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point.
Yellow 1.8km 2 The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start.  The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc.
It will also no longer have a control every time you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls
Orange 2.7km 3

Harder still, the Orange course introduces:

  • Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right
  • Using 'Point Features' as control sites
  • Basic use of a compass
Light Green 3.3km 4

Ideal for improvers  The navigation difficulty increases and you start to use simple contours and point features.

This course uses Hutcliff Wood so there will be brambles...

Map Memory 3km 4

Experienced orienteers or someone up for a challenge!  Rather than carrying a map each control has a map extract that shows the location of the next control.  You have to figure out the route and then run to the next control.  If you lose your way you have no option but to retrace your steps back to the last control and try again.

This course uses Hutcliff Wood so there will be brambles...

Intervals 4 x 5 - 10 minutes 3

4 different loops on the 1:2000 map used at Cliffhanger in 2011.  Each course will take around 5 minutes to complete, with a short recovery between each loop.

Of course you don't have to do all 4 courses and it is good to have a go with the highly detailed maps.

The distances are provisional!

Costs

Adults £4

Children £2

Any additional courses will cost an additional £1

If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.
