Hope everyone enjoyed the orienteering today.  As we were dricing out to put out controls in the rain it didn't look too good but the weather held.

Results and splits are available above.  Looking at the times for the Long Light Green I think we gave it an appropriate name!

A huge thank you to all the helpers today.

Next event will be Cliffhanger - not only do we have the ultrasprint on Saturday but there will be the Maze course and and a 45 minute Score course out in the main Park.  Plus we are running a 5 & 10km Trail Race on Sunday at 11am.  If you haven't been to Cliffhanger I would thoroughly recommend it, there is loads to see and do.

Thanks

Pete

Information

The next in the Saturday Series is at Forge Dam.  The Saturday Series aims to introduce new people to the sport and also provide training opportunities to all orienteers.

We will be based next to the cafe which is here). Alternatively buses 83A and 120 stop close by on Fullwood Road.

Registration for courses will open at 1pm.  You can start any time from 1pm - 3pm but the courses close at 3:30pm.

Beginners Coaching

Lauren Ferrand will be running a beginners coaching session alongside the event.  This will start at 1pm and last for an hour giving you an opportunity to try your new skills out on a course.

Entry Fees

Adults £4

Children £2

Any additional courses will cost an additional £1

If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry.

Orienteering Courses Available

If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.

See below for details on the courses on offer

Course Distance Technical Level Who is it for?
White 1.0km 1 The easiest course and a great place for children to start.  The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point.
Yellow 1.2km 2 The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start.  The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc.
It will also no longer have a control everytime you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls
Short Orange 1.2km 3

Harder still, the Orange course introduces:

  • Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right
  • Using 'Point Features' as control sites
  • Basic use of a compass
Long Orange

3.2km

130m Climb

3

A bit harder than the short course and a lot longer (and hillier).  Long legs mean there are some route choice decisions.

Warning this course crosses a quiet road but please be careful

Light Green

3.1km

200m climb

3

Ideal for improvers. The navigation difficulty increases and you start to use simple contours and point features.

Warning this course crosses a quiet road but please be careful

Map Memory  3km 4

Experienced orienteers or someone up for a challenge!  Rather than carrying a map each control has a map extract that shows the location of the next control.  You have to figure out the route and then run to the next control.  If you lose your way you have no option but to retrace your steps back to the last control and try again.

Venue

Forge Dam forms one of several ponds created along the Porter Valley to feed metal-working mills.  The Porter Valley is wooded along all of its length west from Hunters Bar (Bingham Park) to Ringinglow.  The Forge Dam map includes Forge Dam Park and surrounding woodland, which was planted for the 1951 Festival of Britain.

The Forge Dam map includes Whiteley Woods, a larger area of woods which is also on some versions of the Bingham Park map.  This part also includes an area of overgrown allotments, some of which are now mature woodland.  There is some contour detail and the ruined walls, hedges and bulding bases add interest.
