There are 3 runners on the Orange course who look like they missed punching the finish.  We'll update their times shortly.

The next Saturday event is in 3 weeks time at Concord park.  We'll be back in Graves Park as part of Cliffhanger on 6/7 July.

Starts 1 - 3pm

Information

Following on from great afternoon orienteering sesions in Endcliffe Park this is the next event in the Saturday Afternoon series aimed to introduce new people to the sport and also provide training opportunities to all orienteers.

Graves park is the largest park in sheffield and has a variety of terrain, from open fields to steep wooded valleys and a couple of areas of old quarries.  We will be based in the Cafe.  The session is suitable for all ages and abilities.

The cafe is here.  The nearest parking is next to the Rare Breeds Farm.  The nearest bus stop is served by the 20A every 15 minutes from the centre of Sheffield, more information.

Registration for courses will open at 1pm.  You can start any time from 1pm - 3pm but the courses close at 3:30pm.

Beginners Coaching

Lauren Ferrand will be running a beginners coaching session alongside the event.  This will start at 1pm and last for an hour giving you an opportunity to try your new skills out on a course.

Orienteering Courses Available

If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.

Course Distance Technical Level Who is it for?
White 1.1km 1 The easiest course and a great place for children to start.  The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point.
Yellow 2.1km 2 The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start.  The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc.
It will also no longer have a control everytime you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls
Orange 3.0km 3

Harder still, the Orange course introduces:

  • Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right
  • Using 'Point Features' as control sites
  • Basic use of a compass
Light Green 3.1km 3

Ideal for improvers. The navigation difficulty increases and you start to use simple contours and point features.

Red 4.8km 2/3

Around Orange level but much further, with longer legs between controls you will have some decisions to make on which way will be best

Map Memory 3km 4

Experienced orienteers or someone up for a challenge!  Rather than carrying a map each control has a map extract that shows the location of the next control.  You have to figure out the route and then run to the next control.  If you lose your way you have no option but to retrace your steps back to the last control and try again.

Intervals 4 x 5 - 10 minutes 3

4 different loops on the 1:2000 map used at last years Cliffhanger (see here).  Each course will take around 5 minutes to complete, with a short recovery between each loop.

Of course you don't have to do all 4 courses and it is good to have a go with the highly detailed maps.

The distances are provisional!

Costs

Adults £4

Children £2

Any additional courses will cost an additional £1

If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.

Venue

Graves park is Sheffield’s largest park and arguably provides the widest variety of orienteering terrain.  As well as a good path network and open spaces, there are wooded valleys, steepening at the west, with old mineral workings providing a small area of interesting contour detail.

Non-orienteering attractions include a café and a rare-breeds animal farm.
