Results are up - use the result link above, splits showing the time for each leg are available using the 'other' link.

Well done everyone, hope you all enjoyed sliding round Limb Valley!  We have fixed the times which were originally showing as more than 700 minutes, it looks like they were due to people not punching the box at the finish.

Thank you to everyone who helped out on the day, it wouldn't have happened without you.

Hope to see you all at the next event

Event Information

The second Saturday Afternoon event of 2013 is at Limb Valley, based at Whirlowbrook Hall.  In addition to the courses we will also be running beginners and club coaching to hone your skills.   The session is suitable for all ages and abilities.

The Whirlowbrook Hall is here and there should be ample parking behind the hall or in the car park on the right as you approach the hall

Registration for courses will open at 1pm.  You can start any time from 1pm - 3pm but the courses do close at 3:30pm.

As usual we are looking for volunteers to help out at the event.  If you are able to help for an hour or so then please let me know.

Orienteering Courses Available

After you finish a course, if there is still time you are welcome to try another.

If you are heading off the paths (Light Green, Map Memory and Score) then you should have full leg cover, e.g. jogging bottoms

Course Distance Technical Level Who is it for?
White 1.1km 1 The easiest course and a great place for children to start.  The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point.
Yellow 2.0km 2 The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start.  The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc.
It will also no longer have a control everytime you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls
Orange 2.8km 3

Harder still, the Orange course introduces:

  • Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right
  • Using 'Point Features' as control sites
  • Basic use of a compass
Light Green 3.3km 4

Ideal for improvers. The navigation difficulty increases and you start to use simple contours and point features.

Short Green 2.5km 5

As technically hard as we can make it.  There is an option to use a map that has had the paths removed if the normal course isn't hard enough!

Costs

Adults £4
Children £2
Any additional courses will cost an additional £1
If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry.

Coaching

Beginners and Club Training will take place along side the Saturday Afternoon event.  This starts at 1pm and last for an hour, which will give you a chance to then do one of the courses.
The Beginners coaching is targeted for those running White - Orange standard courses.
Club Coaching is targeted for those running Light Green standard and above (today's session will concentrate on reading contours and not using the compass)

Car parking details to be confirmed (check back here during the week before the event).

Beginner Coaching  £2.50 adult, £1.50 child, £5 family.

Club Coaching  £4 adult, £2 children.  You need to be a member of the Club for this.  Membership is very good value, £15 for adults and only £3 for juniors.

Lauren Ferrand will be running the Beginner's session, Colin Best the Club coaching.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.

Venue

Limb Valley includes Whirlowbrook Park, Whinfell Quarry Garden and the woods either side of Whirlow Brook.

The woodland is mixed conifer and deciduous.  Much of it is very runnable though partly steep valley sides, but there are patches of bramble and holly.
