Thanks for coming.  Sorry control 48 went missing - it was replaced fairly quickly and didn't affect too many people.  Most people seemed to have enjoyed it, especially the quality of urban terrain and Tim's courses.  And the sunshine. Thanks to the SYO helpers, everything seemed to run smoothly, which meant I got to run myself.

Planners Comments

The ‘Walkley’ area was the first urban map in Sheffield and was produced by a couple of our GB team members back around 2005.  We’d always thought it should be used for a proper event but it got pipped by several other areas in recent years before I volunteered to plan this event and got to select the area too.  I hadn’t realised how much of an update the map needed but hopefully you all appreciated the revised map.

As for the courses, it is Sheffield and so it’s both difficult to avoid the hills but also an opportunity to use the hills to provide route choice.  Those on courses 1 and 2 had the long leg which most people seemed to go high on although the lower route was shorter. Courses 1, 2 and 3 used the Upperthorpe estate and several people missed the best routes into, out of, and within the area.  The control picking around controls 56-59 also proved a challenge for a few people.  I think we made good use of the Church grounds/gardens and some people even had time to notice the gospel singing and the old ruins in the garden.  All courses ran around the main Walkley estate at least once;  keeping good map contact was the main challenge in this area along with the need to look at the control descriptions!  A few people came unstuck at the ‘hedge, inside corner’ (even after it had been replaced – it was stolen just before the race started) and ran off and came back a few times before realising – on the other hand, quite a few people ran straight to it.

I always try to put route choice into every leg and I think I achieved that for the majority of them. There were several positive comments at the finish  - I hope you all enjoyed the courses as much as those people did.

Apologies for not pre-warning you of the sudden increase in undergrowth in some of the woods, resulting in a few scratched lower limbs – I only noticed when hanging the controls on the morning – nature playing rapid catch up!  At least there was no extreme weather on the day – warm sunshine always adds to the enjoyment factor.
