Organiser's comments
Many competitors turning up to the event at Rivelin were surprised at how much snow there was. Many hadn’t even consulted the website and seen that there was a bit of concern whether the event would go on given the forecast of snow and wind. Many of the helpers who were obviously local were not surprised by the conditions and would not have been surprised if the event had been cancelled. “Bold decision” was the comment Brian Shaw made as we put up the tent in the snow and bitter cold on Redmires playing fields. But the car park was virtually bombproof and the roads were clear so there was not a problem from an organiser’s point of view. It just took a check from the controller, Ian Cooper, at 7.30am on the morning of the event to confirm that the area was safe for the competition to take place.

There were 128 runs so probably 150 people braved the weather to attend. We expected and catered for 200+ but we should just about have covered our costs – the biggest ones being land access fee to Sheffield Wildlife Trust, toilets and map printing - and may just about have made a small profit (having calculated costs and income on the back of a control description sheet). Most, in fact all - well I didn't hear any complaints - returning competitors seemed to have enjoyed their run. So a small band of hardy helpers to whom I have already sent my thanks and who gave up their time to help in somewhat trying conditions made lots of orienteers very happy.

Planner's Comments
From a planning viewpoint Rivelin certainly had its challenges, notably the steepness of many slopes at higher elevations and the constraints imposed by Out of Bounds areas in the central and western parts of the venue. During past events courses have sometimes proved too long and I tried hard to avoid that outcome. Most of the winning times did not seem excessive so I hope that I mainly succeeded. However, it does appear that the Short Green course was too tough.

My grateful thanks go to Ian Cooper as Controller for many helpful suggestions during the planning phase and advice on technical and safety issues, at a time when he was extremely busy with mapping and other activities. Also, thanks to those who helped put out or collect controls in the rather cool and/or damp conditions. Terrific support all round. Lastly thanks to all those who turned out to compete and made the preparations worthwhile.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.

Venue

The Rivelin Valley map covers the wooded slopes on the south side of the valley above the Rivelin Reservoirs.  It is mixed woodland (mature conifer and deciduous plus some open areas and younger trees) with areas of contour interest.  Its runnability it at its best in winter and early spring; later in the year the vegetation can make going heavy in places.
