Organisers Comments
I hope everyone enjoyed their day at Graves Park. Another great turnout. A big thank you to everyone who helped, the orienteering wouldn't happen without you.
Just a reminder that the next event like this one will be from Weston Park Cafe on 1st December (1 - 3pm). But there is also orienteering next weekend - On Saturday in the city from the ampitheater next to the Train Station (Run by Sheffield Uni Orienteers). On Sunday Derwent Valley orienteers are holding an event at Eyam Moor, which will have courses from White upwards.
Results have been uploaded, you will find these above, along with split times. We still need to do some updates, some times are very long (700+ minutes) which may be due to punching the wrong finish. Also a couple of controls were buried in leaves during the competition which made them a little hard to find for a while. Updated results should be available later.
Information
Following on from great afternoon orienteering sesions in Endcliffe Park and Millhouses this is the third in the Saturday Afternoon series aimed to introduce new people to the sport and also provide training opportunities to all orienteers.
Graves park is the largest park in sheffield and has a variety of terrain, from open fields to steep wooded valleys and a couple of areas of old quarries. We will be based outside the Cafe. The session is suitable for all ages and abilities.
The cafe is here. The nearest parking is next to the Rare Breeds Farm. The nearest bus stop is served by the 20A every 15 minutes from the centre of Sheffield, more information.
Registration for courses will open at 1pm. You can start any time from 1pm - 3pm but the courses close at 3:30pm.
Introductory Session
For those new to orienteering or who would like a refresher we will be running an 'Introduction to Orienteering' session starting at 1:15. After the session there will be time to practice what you have learnt on one of the courses.
Orienteering Courses Available
If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.
Course | Distance | Technical Level | Who is it for? |
White | 1.0km | 1 | The easiest course and a great place for children to start. The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point. |
Yellow | 1.9km | 2 | The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start. The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc. It will also no longer have a control everytime you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls |
Orange | 2.2km | 3 |
Harder still, the Orange course introduces:
|
Light Green | 3.1km | 3 |
Ideal for improvers. The navigation difficulty increases and you start to use simple contours and point features. |
Red | 4.8km | 2/3 |
Around Orange level but much further, with longer legs between controls you will have some decisions to make on which way will be best |
Map Memory | 3km | 4 |
Experienced orienteers or someone up for a challenge! Rather than carrying a map each control has a map extract that shows the location of the next control. You have to figure out the route and then run to the next control. If you lose your way you have no option but to retrace your steps back to the last control and try again. |
Intervals | 5 x 5 - 10 minutes | 3 |
5 different loops on the 1:2000 map used at this years Cliffhanger (see here). Each course will take around 5 minutes to complete, with a short recovery between each loop. Of course you don't have to do all 5 courses and it is good to have a go with the highly detailed maps. |
The distances are provisional!
Costs
Adults £4
Children £2
Any additional courses will cost an additional £1
If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry.
Safety & risk
A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.

Venue
Graves park is Sheffield’s largest park and arguably provides the widest variety of orienteering terrain. As well as a good path network and open spaces, there are wooded valleys, steepening at the west, with old mineral workings providing a small area of interesting contour detail.
Non-orienteering attractions include a café and a rare-breeds animal farm.
