Update 8 July 22:30 Results for the final are here, still working on getting the splits up.

Shock news is that Louise had a misspunch on the Womens A Final, taking controls 20 and 21 in the second butterfly loop in the wrong order.  30 seconds puts her now into second place.  Giving Alice Leake a third Ultrasprint victory!  Congratulations Alice and apologies for taking a while to spot this.

Hope you all enjoyed the day, despite a few issues and problems with download but the orienteering made up for it.  Thanks to all the SYO helpers and also Nev & Ed who stepped in when we were a little stretched!

Initial results for the qualifier are available above and splits are here

The results from the final will be available tomorrow, we just need to merge 4 courses...

If you have photos pop them online and send me a link.

cliffHanger

The UK's premier Ultrasprint orienteering event will return to Cliffhanger on Saturday 7 July at the original Cliffhanger venue, Graves Park.  With the Nottingham City Race on the Sunday come and make a weekend of it, with camping, live music and a bar, see the main cliffhanger website http://www.cliff-hanger.co.uk/

Results and reports from the previous years' Ultrasprints:2007,2008,2009,20102011.

UltraSprint  (Saturday 7th July)

LOGO since 1992 fons blanc vertical small

A high intensity, high speed form of orienteering, the Ultrasprint starts and finishes into a specially constructed labyrinth. Competitors face a technical and physical challenge that includes complex map reading and multi-terrain racing. A number of the UK's top elite orienteers will battle it out over a qualifying stage and final to become the Ultrasprint champion 2012.

Qualification

This will start at 12:00 and will close at 14:00 and will be two courses.  You can have a rest between qualifier 1 and 2 but you must have completed qualifier 2 within 80 minutes of starting qualifier 1.  The final will be based on the combined times of these two runs.

Final

The top 6 men and 6 women will qualify for the A finals.  The actual number in each A final will be decided nearer the event based on the entries and the number of people we think we can have safely charging around the labyrinth.  The A Finals will be mass start races.  The B Final will be a chasing start, the time you start will be based on your qualifying time.  The estimated winning time for the final will be 10 minutes.

Missed Controls

Missed controls in both the qualification and final will result in a time penalty not disqualification.

Map

The main map is 1:1500 with inserts for the Maze sections.

So you know what to expect this map was from the Ultrasprint Final when it was held in Millhouses park a few years ago.

TERRAIN

Unlike Millhouses the majority of the Ultrasprint this year will be on a wooded slope. The courses are planned to keep you out of the worst of the undergrowth, and you could get away with shorts if you are happy with a few scratches...

Score Course (Saturday & Sunday)

A score course will be set out in the park all weekend.  You will receive a specially prepared 1:5000 map of Graves Park with control points marked.  Each control is worth 10 points and you will have 45 minutes to visit as many as possible.  Try to get back within the time limit as you will have 10 points deducted for every minute (or part minute) that you are over the time limit.

To spice things up there will also be a Mass Start on Saturday morning at 11:00, which should give people enough time to recover for the Ultrasprint qualifiers.  .  Please register and collect your map by 10:50.

During the rest of the weekend you can start whenever you are ready (last start each day will be at 16:00).

There will be controls both inside the Cliffhanger arena but most will be in the rest of the park.  The course will start and finish at the main Orienteering hub in Cliffhanger and you will leave and re-enter the Cliffhanger arena by a special orienteer's exit.

Maze Course (Saturday & Sunday)

Ever popular with the kids, there will be 3 different Maze courses to have a go at throughout the weekend.  The maze will be closed from 12:00 - 16:30 on Saturday for the Ultrasprint.

Cliffhanger Course (Saturday & Sunday)

New to Orienteering?  A short course around Cliffhanger will be open all weekend to give you a flovour for the sport.  Navigate your way from one control to the next in the quickest time using electronic time recording at each control.  Checkout your position on the leader board when you finish.

PRIZES

Prize Giving will be at 16:30 on Saturday

In the Ultrasprint will be prizes for the top 3 on each of the A finals and also for the top Male and Female Junior, Vet and Super Vet.  There will also be a draw for spot prizes, everyone who has run in either the ultrasprint or score course at the prize giving will be in the mix to win.

Prizes have been donated by Arcteryx, Buffera, Rat Race, Trail Running Magazine

Entries

As in previous years entry to all the course is included with the Cliffhanger entry.  Under 16s are free.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.

Photography

SYO has an agreed policy on the taking of photographs at events, based on national guidance. This provides a sensible balance between the benefits and risks associated with the taking and use of images. If you are unsure about acceptable practice, please speak to the event organiser. Read our photography policy.

Privacy

When entering our events your personal details (name, gender, age class & club) will appear in the results section of this website. Read our privacy policy to see how we look after your personal data.

Venue

Graves park is Sheffield’s largest park and arguably provides the widest variety of orienteering terrain.  As well as a good path network and open spaces, there are wooded valleys, steepening at the west, with old mineral workings providing a small area of interesting contour detail.

Non-orienteering attractions include a café and a rare-breeds animal farm.
