Planner & Organiser's Comments

Thank you all for coming and for your nice comments after the event. The weather was excellent and the vegetation in the woods in January is better than much of the rest of the year, so you saw the woods at their best. Eccy Woods really is a nice place to have an event.

There was a nice mix of competitors at the event – from experienced orienteers to families and youngsters out for the first time. Well done to all.

The optimum route for the long course was about 8km – Shane Lynch missed control 50 but if he'd taken it he would have done about 51 minutes for the full course. But he did miss 50 so congratulations to Andy Preston's 53 minutes – he wasn't meant to get all the controls in 60 minutes.

Thanks to all our helpers – even for a small event they do help everything to run smoothly.

If any SYO members want to plan or organise any of SYO's small events, please contact Monika Cooper.

Thanks again

Monika (planner) and Ian (organiser) Cooper

Score events are suitable for all levels of orienteering skills.  You collect as many points  as possible in the time allowed, with no penalty (except less points) for missing a control.  At this event all controls are worth 10 points

This is a mass start event with everyone starting at 11:30, although Yellow course runners may start after this.

This event is a repeat of the one organised in October the day before the CompassSport Cup Final, which was not well attended as many people didn't want two runs in a weekend.  But come again even if you did it last time - try different choices this time.  There are three courses:

  • Short Score event (no road crossings) suitable for Yellow standard and above
  • Medium Score – 60 mins
  • Long Score - 60 mins. 2 parts – part 1 2.5k normal course, part 2 score

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.

Photography

SYO has an agreed policy on the taking of photographs at events, based on national guidance. This provides a sensible balance between the benefits and risks associated with the taking and use of images. If you are unsure about acceptable practice, please speak to the event organiser. Read our photography policy.

Privacy

When entering our events your personal details (name, gender, age class & club) will appear in the results section of this website. Read our privacy policy to see how we look after your personal data.

Venue

Ecclesall Woods comprises over 100 hectares (300 acres) of mature deciduous woodland of variable runnability and is notable for a large number of thickets. The gently sloping land is divided by two roads and a network of bridleways, footpaths, streams and ditches. Some of the minor paths have become overgrown or are difficult to discern when covered by autumn leaves.
