Congratulations to our winners Philip Wiegand (junior), Gemma Tate (w) and Kevin Randall (m).  Thanks to Nic Ugur, who did a great job in planning courses (his first event) and organising the venue and food.  Thanks to you all for coming on such a cold day, especially those who helped collect controls.

Apologies for the displacement of control 221.  It was still OK when Kim got there at 10:39, but moved by 11:40.   When I checked it, I wondered about Grippling as it was visible from the pavement, but wrongly decided that those passing would be en-route somewhere, not loitering looking for mischief.

Apologies also for one or two puzzling control descriptions.  My final check wasn’t thorough enough (and I created one problem by changing a fence corner to fence end to match the map, then changing the map to match the old control description and reality).

Handicapping was difficult with such a mix of terrain types in the area.  Those with more than 30 controls to collect had a particular challenge in trying to minimise the number of climbs up and down the slope.  The results include minutes per km based on a nominal course-planning distance on a reasonable route to achieve the target.  Mark Chapman was the fastest but closely followed by Andy Preston, Tim Tett and Philip Wiegand, with Kim Baxter, Adam Wiegand, Rob Baker and Kelly Candy close behind.

The slopes were even more slippery than when I was there last month.  Perhaps the crag control should not have been used.  I moved a contour below it to try to show how steep it was, but a map can’t show the slipperiness.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.

Venue

The most recent Concord Park map covers three very different terrain types:

  • Concord Park: parkland with games courts, scattered trees, gardens etc
  • Wooley Woods: steep mostly runnable woodland with some controur detail
  • Low Wincobank: quiet residential streets with an interesting area of alleys and steps
