redmireView.jogMore than 60 adults and children joined the SYO coaching session on Saturday afternoon and as the hordes descended on a rather misty and atmospheric Redmires, the mushroom pickers and wild campers must have been wondering what on earth was going on.

The participants were divided into 4 different groups depending on age and experience. The children in group 1 focused on orientating and thumbing the map and practised using different line features as handrails to controls. Group 2 based themselves in the quarried area. Their session concentrated on interpreting contours and using compasses to point features. Group 3 and the adult group seemed to cram everything into their session, beginning with a contour session in the quarried area before moving into the woodland to practise compass skills.
