SYO Urban Score Event and Social - Tuesday 21 June 2016

Apologies for the delay in producing these but I had a charity meeting in Bristol all day 22 June, but here they are.

A pity more competitors were not present but those who attended did appear to enjoy it. The area selected was large and hilly enough that, most probably, nobody would get all the controls so a little more thinking was required. It would have been really nice to have had the points score alongside each control, or I should have numbered the controls 1x, 2x and 5x to indicate the points score - sorry. The OpenOrienteeringMap I produced is generated from OpenStreetMap - this is available on the internet for you to look at if interested.

Very well done to Lucy Wiegand and Rob Last - and all the youngsters.

Thank you for coming - and for Monika's help on the night.

Score Event Details

The map will be an Open Orienteering Map around the streets and footpaths of Dore, Totley and Bradway (example below) and is suitable for experienced and beginner orienteers.

The map is at 12500 scale (1cm = 125 metres), with 10 metre contours. It will be printed on waterproof A4 paper, with descriptions of controls on the reverse side - YOU WILL NEED A PEN TO WRITE ONE NUMBER/LETTER AT EACH CONTROL. Further information will be given at the start and will be printed on the rear of your map. SI Units will be used to record your start and finish times - SI units (dibbers) will be available for those who do not have their own.

It is either a 40 or 60 minute (you can choose which to do, it is the same map) score event, where the object is to collect as many controls in the time as possible. You do not need to take the controls in numerical order - just pick the ones you want to visit. Controls will have different points (from 10 to 50) depending on distance from the start. Start and finish are in the same location. Penalty points are -10 points for each minute (or part of a minute) later than your 40 or 60 minute time allowance.

There is one major road (the A621, Abbeydale Road South/Baslow Road) through the area.  There are other busy roads in the area (such as Twentywell Lane) so PLEASE BE CAREFUL AND CROSS THESE WITH CARE. Because of the road crossings, under 16's must be accompanied / shadowed by an adult.
