ORGANISER'S COMMENTS
Hesley is a small area and therefore limits the numbers that can be accommodated. The day of the event brought very nice weather and everyone seemed to enjoy the event. The numbers of juniors were disappointing.
Some thanks. In particular Henry Marston for taking on the planning at short notice. I know he was expecting that we could use electronic punching but it was not possible as our experts were not able to set it up due to other commitments. Also thanks to Eric Shimmin the controller who continues to defy his advancing years!!
Finally thanks to the SYO team and to the Scouts.

PLANNER'S COMMENTS
I innocently went to the DVO Shining Cliff badge event, just before leaving the country for a few days, and was "accosted" by SYO committee members asking me to plan an event at Hesley Woods just after Easter. I made the commitment on the basis that we would be using electronic punching. OK, I was told.
When I first visited I found that the brambles were not as severe as when we last orienteered at Hesley, and learned that a flyer had gone out promising a Blue course - only viable with courses planned for using electronic punching in this small area. Courses were broadly planned, so it had to be 'honesty punching.' From comments at the Finish, people seemed to enjoy the run, and I think it was right to keep the Blue course rather than have Green as the longest course. Some courses might have been a bit short, particularly Red, but extending the length would not have increased interest. You may have noticed that there were electronic elements to the event; laser printed maps and computer printed master maps based on a scanned copy of the map with the course added using PowerPoint (as I do not have a compatible version of OCAD). Another time perhaps we can print maps on demand, saving the need for an excess of blank maps, but we would need waterproof ink as we could not guarantee the good weather.
Apologies to early starters on Blue and Green courses; the little matter of putting out the second master maps quite slipped my mind. Best to put out one for each course with the controls... or have Parts 1 and 2 at the start (Blue in particular would have been too confusing in one sequence, regardless of the punching system).
Thank you all for coming. From what I heard at the finish, most of you thought the event worthwhile.
