SYO Colour Coded Event - Wombwell Woods

Organiser's Outlook
As usual, the 'professional' teams of helpers made for a very relaxed morning for me. I hope you enjoyed your runs especially the person from Aboyne (570 miles!!)

Planner's Perceptions
The northern start at Wombwell provides a challenge to the competitor (the indistinct features of the old tip) and the planner, trying to find a clear route for white and yellow. Are there no local dog-walking orienteers we can set on to beat down and maintain paths under the power line and then right or left - across to the path near the field or to the one near the scarp edge? However, the poorly defined paths do mean that there are fewer passers-by to disturb the controls. Somewhat surprisingly, two did go missing form White/Yellow. I hope Orange competitors enjoyed the run down the gully. One thicket has grown so that it now blocks the gully, making it an orange rather than yellow challenge.
Blue and Green had a high proportion of pits, but at least such controls are less visible to passers-by. More can be added for the next update of the map! I did hear of a group of orienteer standing in a depressed area in broken ground saying 'this is the pit. Where is the kite?' Wombwell can be fast, but has its tricks. When I was doing the descriptions, it didn't seem worth doing loose descriptions for Part 2 if the descriptive information could be provided in advance if a coherent set of control codes could be reserved to be copied down or remembered (numbers increasing from 60 to 68). It seemed simple to me, but took some explaining at registration - sorry Andy.
I hope you enjoyed the day. I did!
Henry Marston
Controller's Corner
The problem for the planner in Wombwell is to produce some good legs which don't just end up as a path run. Henry produced some good courses making the most of the area but at the same time being conscious on past experience at Wombwell that controls could be subject to vandalism if very visible. Hence the use of pits on the longer courses. The vandalism problem came to light when we collected controls with two missing on the shorter courses but after competitors had completed their course. (my burnt out car count was five!!)
Hazel's organisation ran very smoothly and the feedback I received was that everybody enjoyed the event. Well done and also to the Sutherlands for an interesting string course.
Final comment from SYO Chair(s) Dave Peel and Jenny James before departing for the World Cup races in Japan is that the woods would be good for short races or night events.
