Club Champs
5th December 1998
Treeton & Hail Mary Woods
Well that was fun but I'll not make the mistake of winning again! (I wonder how many past winners have said that before?) In fact, by organising this year's Club Champs. I have learned lots about planning and organising and had a good deal of enjoyment in the process. In future I'll not make the mistake of giving courses such similar numbers; this resulted in two runners being confused at the map exchange and having to run the wrong second part to their courses -sorry.
Using a system of start time and course difficulty for handicapping creates problems of trying to space similarly competent runners in the woods. This has often been solved by using multiple loops but at Treeton this would have meant a lot of dead running across the field. I therefore planned parallel courses using the same controls in different directions, hence: 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 2c etc. I have listed the results by course number though it may have made a slight difference which way they were run.
Despite a snowy down pour just before the start the weather was kind and the 52 members who competed all seemed to have had a good run and worked up an appetite for the mulled wine and mince pies at the finish.
The infamous "pit in a holly bush control" claimed a few victims despite being adorned with tinsel and a Santa's Grotto sign!
The Treasure "O" was enjoyed by seven children using an enlargement of a corner of the map to follow a trail of cardboard Christmas trees. (Apologies to those of you who were confused when you found these hanging on your controls.)
Thanks to all who helped on the day and to Guy Seaman who helped with control checking and to Robin Stansfield who did the handicapping. I feel Mike and Jean Lomas deserve a particular vote of thanks for organising the quiz and socialising in the Beehive pub. It was great to put a few names to faces and I hope there will be some more opportunities to run and socialise with SYO next year.
Finally I would like to confirm Jenni Fiander as Club Champion for 1998 who with first man home Eric Shimmin will be organising next years event, please make life easy for them by getting your entries in early next November.
