January 2024 Events

Happy New Year to all our members!

SYO get 2024 off to a cracking start with 5 events in January!

Botanical Gardens - 6th Jan

First up is the 4th Saturday Series event at the Botanical Gardens on the 6th January. These events are specifically aimed at newcomers and families. Alongside the white to light green courses, there are challenging green and blue courses for experienced orienteers which extend to the Collegiate Campus and surrounding urban areas. No need to enter in advance for this event - just turn up on the day. More info here.

The SYO juniors are running a refreshment stall - all donations of baked goods welcome! As usual we require lots of helpers. Volunteers get a free run - please email Pauline if you can help.

Millstone Edges Weekend - 14th/15th Jan

This is followed by a great weekend of racing on the Millstone Edges. On Saturday 14th January we have a middle race on Baslow & Curbar Edges, followed by the Yorkshire Champs on Hathersage Moor (the western part of Burbage) on Sunday 15th January. There are courses suitable for newcomers at both events. Details for Saturday's event are here and Sunday's here.

Entry needs to be made in advance via Fabian4. There is a discount for entering both days. To guarantee your choice of course, please enter by Sunday 7th January. Entry after this date will be available as long as maps remain and will be at an increased cost. There will be no entry on the day.

We require volunteers to enable these events to go ahead. Helpers get a free run. Use code SYOHELPER when entering via Fabian4. Please enter asap so our organisers can plan the volunteer rotas. If you are not able to run, but are willing to help, please email Paul Johnson for Saturday or Bronwen Doyle for Sunday.

Wednesday Evening Events - 17th & 31st Jan

Not just one but two as February's WEE just sneeks into the 31st January slot! First up is an urban around Crookes and Broomhill on Wednesday 17th January; then on the 31st January we return to Lees Hall Golf Course. The area has been extended, on a new map by Oli Johnson, to include the woodland adjoining the golf course offering extra challenge to the green & blue courses. There will be post event socials after both events. Put the dates in your diary - more details to follow shortly.
