We wanted to make our Saturday Series participants aware of two national competitions, which are organised annually by the British Schools Orienteering Association and are open to all pupils Y5 - Y13.
This year both competitions are not too far from Sheffield. The competitions are attended by pupils from across the country, and are very enjoyable events.
1. Saturday 14th October: British Schools Score Championships at Martinshaw Woods, Groby LE6 0FP
A Score event requires competitors to visit as many controls as possible in a set time. This is both an individual and school team competition. A single entry form should be submitted for all pupils from the same school and can be made by a parent representative. Please note the entry deadline of 25th September 2023.
Sunday 19th November: British Schools Orienteering Championships at Temple Newsam, Leeds
The format for the competition is the more usual 'line course', with different courses for each school year. There are 3 competition categories: individual, school year, and whole school. A single entry form should be submitted for each school. Entry deadline 2nd November 2023.
Home schooled pupils are also eligible to take part and competitors do not need to be a member of an orienteering club. While it's great if there are a number of children from the same school taking part, plenty of single pupils, without a school team, also take part in the individual categories.
The next 2 Schools Saturday events will provide great practice for these competitions:
Sat 7th Oct : Bolehills
Sat 4th Nov: EIS & Olympic Legacy Park
