WOC 2022 Celebrations for GB

The first sprint only World Orienteering Champs was held in Denmark in early July. GB had a fabulous competition bringing home their biggest ever medal haul. There was gold for Megan Carter-Davis in the individual sprint and bronze for Alice Leake. Megan also won silver in the knock out sprint and there was a silver medal for the GB team in the mixed sprint relay. SYO's Jonny Crickmore took part in the knock out sprint, reaching the semi-final and finishing 10th overall - a fabulous result.

Volunteers Evening

As part of our continuing 50th celebrations, SYO held a volunteers evening last Thursday to thank all our event offficials, coaches, mappers, committee members and day to day helpers. Despite the torrential rain, it was a very successful evening with lots of discussion about how to improve the voulunteering experience within the club. There was also plenty of time for socialising and Jacky served up a wonderful spread. Thank you to Jenny J, Jacky, Susan and Pauline for organising.

Lakes 5 day orienteering - 7-12 August

Multi-day orienteering events are a fabulous opportunity to orienteer in new places and socialise with orienteers from all over the country. The Lakes 5 day is held every 4 years on excellent Lake District terrain. 86 members of SYO are already signed up. If you would like to join us, you have until 24th July to enter. More info here.

Treeton and Ponderosa Event Reports

We held 2 successful regional events recently on very different types of terrain. Many members enjoyed the contrasting wood and tricky open area at Treeton in early May. The event was ably put on by Dave Peel (planner), Steve Dempsey (organiser) and Mark Chapman (controller). There were many compliments post event and we're very grateful for their efforts.

Then in July we moved to the streets of Sheffield for an urban race around Ponderosa and Kelham Island. Again there were many postive comments about the courses and organisation. Huge thanks to planner Colin Lynch, organiser Susan Guy and controller Clive Wilson.

Saturday Series Events Update

The penultimate event in the 2021/22 series was held at Meersbrook Park in May. This was the first visit in 4 years here so it was good to get out in an area that was less familiar. Map updates were provided by Steve Dempsey & Oli Johnson and Paul Norman's courses provided a good level of challenge and were enjoyed by many - thanks all!

The final event of the league was held in Millhouses Park in June. Ian Cooper had extended the map to include Marriot Wood so this added a new dimension to the longer courses. Thanks to planner Alex Forrest for keeping us thinking with the switch between the wooded slopes and parkland.

Wednesday Evening Events Report

Our very popular monthly Wednesday evening events continue. May's event was at Lodge Moor - an interesting area comprising of tricky urban housing, parkland and an old prisoner of war camp. Thanks to Peter Guillaume for planning a set of enjoyable courses and the Howsams, who stepped in last minute to organise.

June's event was at the lovely Wentworth Castle Gardens. The sun shone and the gardens looked so beautiful, it was easy to be distracted from the orienteering. Thanks to David Thomas for interesting courses that really kept people on their toes, Paul Bradbury for pulling everything together on the organisational side and Steve Dempsey for the map updates.

Lift Whatsapp Group

We have set up a whatsapp group so people can more easily arrange to share lifts to events. If you require lifts, are happy to car share or can offer lifts to others, please email Pauline with your mobile number and I'll add you to the group.

Access & Environment Group

British Orienteering would like to invite individuals, with an interest in environmental issues, from across clubs to help support and steer the work of British Orienteering as we respond to the access and environmental challenges we face.

Our Access and Environment Officer Emma Monkman is leading the creation of an Access & Environment Steering Group – who will meet (online) approximately 4 times a year.  The first meeting will be held on Monday 18th July at 7pm.

Why do we need you?

Here is just a snippet of some of things we would love your insight, experience and direction with creating;

  • An Access Charter – this will be a standard that landowners and managers can expect from us.
  • A platform to discuss environmental risks and how to manage them within our sport.
  • What Research and data capturers we need so we can collate data to inform our environmental impact assessment.
  • Website signposting & resources

Emma says ‘we have already created a Whatsapp group made up of Access officers, which is serving as a fantastic mechanism to air questions or issues.  Whilst I don’t expect everyone to want to join in face to face discussions – what I have already learnt since I joined British Orienteering is just the depth of knowledge, understanding and innovation there is out there and together I hope we can drive forward some of this key work’

If you would like to join the meeting on 18th July, please email Pauline for the details.

Social Media

Social Media is an important marketing and advertising tool and SYO are keen to use it for publicising the club, sport and our events. We also regularly report on events and celebrate members' achievements. Please like our page , join the SYO group and follow us on Twitter. The more likes we get on our posts, the more people see our page, so please try to engage regularly.

Interestingly the recent post about tree planting has received 77 likes - it would be good if the orienteering ones got even half that engagement!
