About SYO
South Yorkshire Orienteers (SYO) have 300 members ranging in age from 5 to 85. There is a wide range of ability and experience within the club from beginners to elite orienteers, who represent Great Britain all over the world. We offer a friendly and informal welcome to the sport - supporting adult and junior beginners and more seasoned orienteers alike with coaching and a programme of regular events.
South Yorkshire Orienteers is member of the Yorkshire and Humberside Orienteering Association (YHOA) and British Orienteering.
What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.
It does not matter how young, old or fit you are as you can choose the course that's right for you and run, jog or walk it at your own pace. It is excellent for adults wanting to shape up, add some excitement and mental challenge to their running and meet new friends. It is also ideal for families as everyone can take part at the level that's right for them and it allows children to develop independence, confidence and decision making skills.

10 British Champions for SYO
Olympic Rings at the Olympic Park
There were fantastic performances again from SYO at the British Sprints and Middles last weekend.
The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park provided an exciting setting for the British Sprint Championships, with most courses visiting the iconic Olympic Rings on their penultimate control in the heats. After successful completion of both heats and finals, 3 SYO members were crowned Sprint champion - Andy Preston M35, Tim Tett M55 and Jenny Peel W45 and there were well deserved podium positions for Robbie Lightfoot M10, Pete Tryner M40, Martin Ward M45 and Freya Tryner W10.
Freya Tryner British Middle Champion W10

Congratulations to the 7 British Middle champions Freya Tryner W10, Pippa Dakin W18, Jenny Peel W45, Euan Tryner M12, Andy Preston M35, Charlie Adams M50 and Tim Tett M55. Thank you to all the club members that made the trip (especially non-running chauffeurs) - your efforts are really appreciated. Congratuations particularly to the 7 course winners: Kim Baxter, Jenny Peel, Imogen Pieters, Pippa Dakin, Tim Tett, Dom Dakin and Euan Tryner. Well done also to the other club members whose results counted to the final score: Mark Chapman, Andy Preston, Colin Smith, Pete Gorvett, Henry Marston, Peter Tryner, Sam Doyle, Alex Elliot, Martin Ward, Louise Adams, Hilary Bloor, Michael Adams, Dean Field, John Franklin, Richard Baxter, Wendy Billing, Peter Guillaume and Zac Field.
SYO qualify for YBT Final
On Saturday 15th May SYO hosted the Yorkshire heat of the Yvette Baker Trophy at Sandall Beat. The YBT is an inter-club competition for juniors named after Britain’s first orienteering world champion. Doncaster Racecourse provided an excellent base and the wood was gloriously runnable, producing some very fast times.
SYO fielded a huge team of 43 juniors ranging in age from 7 to 18. They all competed brilliantly, resulting in a resounding victory for SYO over EPOC, AIRE and HALO. Well done to everyone who took part but particularly those that scored in the SYO 1st team:
Pippa Dakin Green Women
Dom Dakin Green Men
Seb Mobus Light Green Men
Euan Tryner Orange Men
Alex Elliott Orange Women
Freddie Emmett Yellow Men
Conrad Reuber Yellow Men
Freya Tryner Yellow Women
Josie Conduit Yellow Women
Many thanks to organiser, Lucy Wiegand; planner, Dean Field and controller Clive Wilson for delivering a fantastic event.
