button.gifO-Ringen 31st July 2010, Adam
7 SYO members made the trip over to Örebro, Sweden for the 46th O-Ringen last week. The weather wasn't brilliant, but the complex area's proved a great challange. There were over 11,000 competitors at this years event, less than previous years. Overall results were: Charlie Adams 22nd, Louise Adams 52nd, Michael Adams 69th, Marcia Bradbury 72nd, Janet Adams 107th, Adam Bradbury 128th and Paul Bradbury 137th.
button.gifParkrun at Endcliffe Park 15th July 2010, Adam
For those SYO Members living in/near Sheffield who want a bit of speed training, from 10th July, parkrun started in Sheffield at Endcliffe Park. As at many other venues through the UK, who already host their own parkruns, it is a free 5km timed run starting at 9:00am every Saturday. It's good for newcomers to running, or as a time trial for the elite. Details are on www.parkrun.com, look under 'events'. People who want to run should register (a one off task for all parkruns) by Friday night before their first Saturday run. Update 20 July: It is now possible to register with club South Yorkshire Orienteers.
button.gifJIRCS and European Youth Champs 1st July 2010, PeterThe
YHOA Junior Squad
Congratulations to the SYO juniors representing YHOA who came 3rd at the Junior Interregionals, especially Aidan Smith
for the individual performance of the weekend trophy "for his 2nd place on M18 when he is still a first year 16" and to Simon Bradbury and Michael Adams for their runs in the winning boys relay team YHOA2.

Good luck to Aidan, who is now heading for Spain to take part in the European Youth Champs this weekend.

button.gifJukola Relay 19th June 2010, Martin
Five teams from SYO and ShUOC (and friends) took part in the largest orienteering relay in the world this weekend, in Kytaja near Helsinki, Finland.  The women's Venla race took part on Saturday afternoon, with 1105 teams of four starting.  SYO's teams finished an excellent 125th (Grace Elson, Heather Gardener, Laura Daniel, Jenny Johnson) and 297th (Lizzie Ingham, Lesley Ward, Hilary Bloor, Clare Baker).

The men's race, which starts at 11pm as it gets dark and runs through the night, had about 1500 teams of seven starting.  SYO's teams finished a very creditable 46th (Jamie Stevenson, Matthew Crane, Oliver Johnson, Neil Northrop, Ralph Street, Robert Baker, Graham Gristwood) and 168th (John Rocke, Kris Jones, Chris Smithard, Tim Tett, Charlie Adams, Dave Abrams, Richard Guillaume).  Unfortunately the third SYO team (Alex Rothman, Martin Ward, Todd Oates, Dave Harrison, Ben Carter, Tom Beasant, Forrest Mann) was disqualified after one of Dave's punches didn't register.  The best ever result by a GBR team is 41st, so the team came very close to bettering this.

This year's event was one of the hardest ever races, according to the locals, with both the terrain and technical challenge being very tough.

Most of the weekend's events were filmed by Oli, so expect a new film release of this exciting event soon...!

button.gifCliffhanger Ultrasprint weekend
The UK's premier Ultrasprint orienteering event will return to Cliffhanger on Saturday 3 July. A high intensity, high speed form of orienteering, the Ultrasprint starts and finishes into a specially constructed labyrinth. Competitors face a technical and physical challenge that includes complex map reading, multi-terrain racing, and a number of river crossings. A number of the UK's top elite orienteers will battle it out over a qualifying stage and final to become the Ultrasprint champion 2010. Qualifiers are open from 11am-1pm and the chasing start final begins at 2pm. EOD only, entries are FREE to all visitors to Cliffhanger.

Why not make a weekend of it and combine with the
EPOC regional event at Holmfirth on Sunday 4 July, part of the YHOA urban league.

Visitors to Cliffhanger can experience the labyrinth for themselves Sunday 4 July after watching the experts racing around the park on Saturday. It is free of charge to take part and test yourself over a series of short courses of increasing difficulty. South Yorkshire Orienteers will have a number of experienced athletes on hand to offer tips and coaching, and you will be provided with a specially produced map that is yours to keep. All ages and abilities are welcome.

Cliffhanger is one of the UK’s largest outdoor outdoor-pursuits festivals, based in one of Sheffield’s biggest green spaces. The aim of the event is to Inspire & Involve. Featuring competitions or demonstrations in rock climbing, orienteering, kayaking, mountain biking, running, skiing & snowboarding, skateboarding, free running, adventure racing and more, visitors will be able to watch elite sports-people of all ages competing or demonstrating, and then take part in the sports they have just been inspired by. Pay to enter the festival and orienteer for free.

Watch this space for more info and see
Cliffhanger.

Barnsley Orienteers (a satellite of SYO) is starting up next week, coordinated by Tim Mullett.  Website is

A weekly club night is starting on Tuesdays from 11th May.  Details in the fixtures section above.

button.gifSYO comfortably through first round of CompassSport Cup 26th April 2010, Peter
The first round was put on by HALO at Scardale and Knapton in North Yorkshire.  SYO won with 2377 points out of a maximum possible of 2462.  AIRE were 2nd with 2274 and also go through to the final at Burbage in October.

The event was enjoyable, the northern woodland has some good orienteering, though the event was slightly marred by the course lengths being wrongly calculated, so 50% longer than expected.  Congratulations to all scorers, particularly those counting for the first time for SYO, who I suspect are Jaimie Buckley, Tony Hall, Dean Field,  Zachary Field, Jake Field and Katherine Hall (let me know if I'm wrong).  The new rules splitting boys and girls on the two junior courses seem much fairer, giving the girls a better chance to score.

button.gifAidan selected to represent GBR at EYOC 21st April 2010, Martin
Congratulations to Aidan Smith who has been selected to be a member of the Great Britain team at the European Youth Orienteering Champs to be held in Spain from 1st to 4th July.

button.gifRach and Oli win Elite titles at British Middle Distance champs 17th April 2010, Martin
On a sunny spring day in the South Lake District, Rachael Elder and Oli Johnson made it an SYO double in the 21 elite classes.  The courses in Haverthwaite Heights were both technically and physically challenging, but Oli reckoned he had lost no more than 10 seconds on his course, putting him about a minute ahead of SYO Club Coach Graham Gristwood in 2nd place.

Lots of other SYO members achieved podium places in other age classes - more results to follow.

button.gifJK International Orienteering Weekend 6th April 2010, Martin
The UK's largest orienteering event of 2010, the Jan Kjellstrom (JK), was held in Devon over the Easter weekend.  Lots of SYO members headed down for the four days of competition, and it was very successful for many (perhaps our best set of results ever?).

button.gifBNC 2010 MartinBNC 2010 SimonScottish Weekend 8th March 2010, Adam
Last weekend a few devoted SYO members travelled up to Scotland for a series of orienteering events. First up on Saturday was a sprint around the Kings' Buildings at Edinburgh Univeristy. The British Night Championships was also on Saturday at Dreghorn Barracks. This was tough area at night, made even more so by several inches of ground snow, but nonetheless Simon Bradbury and Martin Ward won their classes to become British Night Champions in M16 and M40L respectively. This event was filmed by BBC Scotland. On Sunday there was an event at Gullane Dunes, a lovely Scottish area with detailed contours, the sea on one side and a golf course on the other.

Well done to SYO's new British Night Champions, Simon and Martin, and to all the other SYO members who competed at these events.

button.gifNew British Orienteering Rankings List Launched  21st January 2010, Martin
British Orienteering maintains a ranking list of orienteers, based on results from ranking events. The new ranking system includes everyone in a single list, which can then be filtered (by age class, gender, and by club). The list also shows the number of positions you have moved up, or down, since the previous week. Here's a
ranking list of SYO members
