Planners comments

Despite the glitches, I’m on a high due to the obvious enjoyment & appreciation of the courses expressed to me & overheard.

The area is not the most quaint of those used for urban orienteering but gave the opportunity for varied leg design. I deliberately made course 1 at the high end of the guidelines as I’d observed that winners at other events often went round in 30-35 minutes, more of an urban sprint. The other courses were proportional. Some found the courses over long but times seem to be in an acceptable range. Perhaps some debate about what different people would like from an urban event would be worthwhile.

The gates which had been agreed would be open but which we discovered were not, was  highly irritating & Peter & Gorvett & I could have lived without furiously marking little black lines on maps from 9:45 am until 10:15. It was still difficult for competitors & I’m grateful for their forbearance.

Although I did lots of line splits & took care over the position of numbers on the course maps, I missed one section of line which should have been split & obscured one route choice with a number. Apologies for those.

Peter Gorvett’s expertise & persistent attention to detail were of great help & his map is excellent involving many hours/weeks of work; Tim Wiegand had an unusually lengthy & tedious task in setting up the old SI units which we used because we feared vandalism. In the event, there was none except for one kite & the residents were helpful & supportive. Tim also had to renumber all the units because I’d planned on the newer SI identification numbers.

I am incredibly grateful to Clive, Ryan, Guy, Ray & Peter for collecting controls & was home for 3:05pm instead of the 5pm I was expecting.

We Orienteers tend to be dignified (some more dignified than others) middle class, so I hope you all enjoyed experiencing the evidence of industrial decline, specialist shopping & therapy venues & working class life.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.

Photography

SYO has an agreed policy on the taking of photographs at events, based on national guidance. This provides a sensible balance between the benefits and risks associated with the taking and use of images. If you are unsure about acceptable practice, please speak to the event organiser. Read our photography policy.
