About SYO

South Yorkshire Orienteers can boast over 200 members with an age range of 5-75 years.

The club finished 3rd in the British Orienteering Club of the Year competition for 2006. There is a wide range of ability within the club including 2003 World Sprint Orienteering Champion and 2006 World Middle Championship Bronze Medallist Jamie Stevenson (currently based in Denmark).
buttonBritish team coaches Dave and Jenny Peel are also members of the club as are top British Elite runners Rob Baker, Nick Barrable, Oli Johnson, Neil Northrop, Jo Stevenson, Jenny Johnson and Helen Winskill. The Regional Development Officer for Yorkshire is SYO member Colin Best.

buttonThe club provides regular events in the South Yorkshire region as well as training session often tied in with the University orienteering club ShUOC. New members are always welcome and enquiries should be addressed to Jill Gorvett, SYO Membership Secretary. Please feel free to come along and give orienteering a go at one of our events, training sessions or club nights (see fixtures page) before joining up.

buttonMany SYO members also train, and race, with local running clubs namely Dark Peak Fell Runners and Hallamshire Harriers.

buttonSouth Yorkshire Orienteers has members from under 10 years old to over 70. We seek to make their orienteering World Champion - Jamieenjoyable and safe. The club achieved Clubmark status in 2007.

buttonFor the benefit of all our members we work within the Health and Safety guidelines laid down by British Orienteering.

buttonWe take our duty of care seriously and seek to ensure that children andvulnerable adults have fun, learn and develop and to help us in this aim we have adopted and promote The British Orienteering policy on Protecting Young and Vulnerable People. We have codes of conduct for Officials and Volunteers, Parents and juniors. We have a Lead Junior Coach who sits on the management committee, as does the Junior Co-ordinator. We also have a Junior Team manager.
